4 Ideas for a Rainy Day in Helsinki

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Helsinki chapter.

So far during our “Summer in Finland” themed content week we have offered plenty of suggestions to spend time outdoors when the weather is lovely. However, as anyone who’s lived in Finland for an extended period of time will know, the weather here is unpredictable at best. What if it’s raining cats and dogs? Well, we’ve got you covered:

Go to the movies

But not just any theater! Forget Finnkino for once and try out a smaller, more quaint independent theater. Kino Engel shows the latest independent films to hit the screens, while Orion shows classics and generally older films.

Go to a museum

A classic for rainy days: getting lost in a museum. Helsinki City Museum is always free, and it generally hosts Helsinki-themed exhibitions.

Go to a church

Helsinki has plenty of churches to explore and admire regardless of one’s faith or lack thereof. The Kamppi Chapel of Silence (pictured above) is a perfect place to forget about the outside world for a little while. Located in central Narinkkatori, its undulated wooden walls are wonderfully insulated: so much so that, upon walking in, all one can hear is silence.

Go to sauna

Sauna is the ultimate Finnish experience, plus there is simply no better way to keep dry! Unsure where to go? Don’t miss our previous article listing four public saunas to try in Helsinki.
