A Tinderella Story

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Hawaii chapter.

We’ve swiped left, we’ve swiped right. We’ve seen the hot matches and the not so hot matches. We’ve read all the cheesy pick-up lines, and we’ve been asked for nudes. But what happens when the guy doesn’t use the terrible pick-up lines or ask for a picture of your boobs? What happens when he’s not just looking for a girl to hook-up with?

My freshman year of college came, and of course we were all looking for cute boys. My new friend, Alice, had made a Tinder and every Monday night at the cafeteria she would tell my friends and I about the weekend’s boys she had matched with. But one night at dinner, when she told us about Michael—her newest match—it was different.

Alice says, “I’d seen him before on campus, but I’d never talked to him, so when he messaged me, I decided to talk to him. I felt like I sort of knew him!”

When I asked her why she thought it worked so well, she said, “Our first date we decided to watch a movie that we both wanted to see, and we ended up talking through the whole thing instead. I think we stayed up until 6 a.m., just talking and hanging out. We connected really well and had a lot of the same interests. So for us, it just kind of worked, I guess.”

You can go ahead and say “awww” now because I know I just did.

Now, they have been dating for a year and six months, and are thriving in a long-distance relationship. In May, Michael flew from Hawaii to Seattle to surprise Alice for her birthday. #goals

Alice recommends using Tinder to try and find a significant other and has some advice for all you single ladies out there:

“I think I would recommend it just because it did work out for me. There’s a lot of people out there that you probably wouldn’t think to talk to. Like I know I probably wouldn’t have had the confidence to talk to Michael in person without matching with him on Tinder first,” she said. “For advice… I would say make sure you really talk to them through the app or text first before meeting them. And meet somewhere in public of course; our first time meeting was in my dorm building which really wasn’t smart. But he turned out not to be a creep, so I think I got lucky!”

So have you been avoiding Tinder because of the guys that want nothing more than to know if you’re DTF? Well try again ladies. Go ahead and re-download Tinder, because you just might make your own Tinderella Story.

*Note: if Tinder isn’t for you, try the new dating app First that just launched June 13 for iOS users. No more swiping. Just post a date idea and time. Someone says they’re interested, and you can choose who to go on the date with. You can even choose whether you want to pay, him to pay, or split 50/50. Yay! No more awkwardly eyeing the check to see if he grabs it first!
