5 Social Media Mistakes

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Hawaii chapter.

Do you think before you tweet? Spell check before you post? Take the time to think about publishing that ~REaLlY CuTe~ photo of yourself chugging a bottle of Ciroc on your friends 21st birthday, it may cost you your job!

A job recruiting platform called Jobvite released a survey last year about social recruiting of future employees, and what they look for when finding that perfect candidate. You might be surprised to find out that a whopping 55% of job recruiters have reconsidered a job candidate based off of their social media profile, and 61% of those reconsecrations were negative.

Here are the most important things you might want to double check for when publishing to your social media platforms:

1. Illegal Drug References

Ok, this might come as an obvious to some people, but a forgetful mind could cost you your dream job. 83% of employers said they saw any sort of illegal drug reference as a negative reflection on the potential employee and would reconsider their job offer.

2. Sexual Posts

Coming in at second place is sexual posts or sexually related posts. Not only are these inappropriate for a majority of workplaces, but they introduce your future employer to too much of your intimate life without asking. 70% of job recruiters said sexual posts will count against you when considering the position.

3. Spelling/Grammar

You might think you keep your Facebook and Twitter clean of any unwanted “TMI” material, but spelling and grammar is a turn off to 66% of employers. Having poor spelling and grammar indicate a lack of caring for the way you’re represented, and therefore create a poor image of the company. When in doubt, spell check it out!

4. Profanity

“Words are words,” you may think, but the rest of the world could possibly think differently. Profanity is reported to be a turn of by 66% of recruiters, keep it classy ladies!

5. Alcohol

Yes, alcohol. Even if you’re of age, filter your alcohol related posts because 44% of employers found them to negatively portray who you are.

Just remember this: if it’s not okay in the workplace, it’s not okay on social media! The smallest of mistakes could cost you the job of your dreams, so play it safe!
