“The Salubrious Senior”: Chocolate Bars and Tasty Treats for Christmas*

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Haverford chapter.

With only a few weeks left until Christmas, it’s time to start deciding which chocolate you’re going to get for your loved ones and which ones you’ll keep for yourself. My favorites, all dark or bittersweet, are full of antioxidants and made with less sugar and fat than milk or white chocolates.  These three bars are great for snacking, baking, and yes, the occasional sharing.

1. Mast Brothers Chocolate

Based out of Williamsburg Brooklyn, these two brothers make bars with just two ingredients: chocolate and sugar. I’m particularly fond of their Brooklyn Blend, which is made with a mix of different cocoa beans and very minimal amounts of sugar. It’s more bitter than your run-of-the-mill chocolate but is perfectly smooth with a slight bite.

2. Trader Joe’s Dark Chocolate Lover Chocolate Bar

Made with 85% Fair Trade Columbian Cocoa, this bar is not only delicious, it’s definitely on a college budget: $2.00 for a box of two thin bars. While the bars are admittedly not as thick as some may like, the flavor makes up for it.  This chocolate is deep, dark, intensely fruity, and lightly sweet.

3. Hershey’s Special Dark

A classic for a reason, this dark chocolate bar combines the perfect amount of sweetness to the intensity of the cocoa.  Great for melting into a warm mug of milk for rich hot chocolate, it’s also great for breaking off a square for a quick nibble.  It’s incredibly smooth, sugary enough to satisfy any cravings, and tastes exactly like chocolate should.

Let’s be honest; chocolate is the best snack out there, and a great ingredient to include in any treats you make for yourself or your honey this Christmas Day. To make sure your day goes off without a hitch, here are five sweet treats that are easy to make, relatively healthy, and feel extraordinarily decadent.  Whether you’re enjoying these alone or with a special someone, they’re sure to sweeten up your December 25th.

Chocolate Truffles are a classic. Customize them with different fillings, like cream cheese or peanut butter. If you’re over 21, add some flavored liquor into the chocolate mix for a sophisticated treat.

Who wouldn’t love a pan of Fudgy Brownies this Christmas Day?
