Summer Blog Series, Pt 1

Wednesday, June 30, 2010

Each week throughout the summer, our staffers around the world will be blogging to share their experiences with you! Be sure to keep checking back! Want to write a blog for Her Campus Harvard? Email Olivia at olivia@hercampus.com!

So like many of you probably are, I am back at home for the summer. And like many of you probably are, I am definitely having to fight off the boredom! On the plus side, my summer job is actually pretty awesome. I am working for the Shakespeare Festival in my hometown of Livermore, California. I am not only doing box office work for them, but I also get to be in one of the shows, Romeo and Juliet. The show opens in less than two weeks so rehearsals are really starting to take over my life, but it’s getting really exciting as well.

I know everyone thinks love when they think R&J, but I have to say so far the fights are my favorite! Fight choreography just finished up today and all the sword fights are so complex and intense. One of them has both people using a rapier and a dagger at the same time, which obviously takes loads of concentration and coordination. Hopefully I learn to do it someday if I keep acting!

We start dress rehearsals next week so we get to see the costumes for the first time. Our version is traditional, so it’s set in the sixteenth century and the sketches for the dresses we get to wear were gorgeous, so I can’t wait to see how the gowns look finished. (Pictures from the show coming next month…!)

For those of you stuck at home like me, I hope you are finding interesting aspects to your summer jobs/internships and you are managing to keep busy. And if all else fails, you can join me in my recently acquired addiction to terrible reality television…
