Looking for a Way to Give Back? Look to Music Unites

Saturday, January 15, 2011

Recently, OK! Magazine Beauty Director Michelle Edgar reached out to Her Campus Harvard about a fantastic service opportunity called Music Unites. We were intrigued by the organization, which offers music programs for underprivileged children. Michelle Golden answered a few of our questions, and we have to say - we're impressed! Music Unites is also looking to start an On Campus group at Harvard, but they need your help! Read below to see what the organization is about, and how YOU can get involved!

Q: What's the goal of Music Unites?
A: The charity is dedicated to bringing music education to underprivileged children in underfunded inner city school systems. Our goal is to connect people through the universality of music by providing communities with opportunities for a rich musical experience.

Q: How do you go about achieving your goal?
A: This is achieved through education programs and by offering established and emerging musicians performance opportunitiesin a variety of venues and locations, including schools, where they act as mentors to the students. We also nourish the next generation of performers by providing audiences and performance opportunities, while at the same time enriching the listening experienceof the public, allowing them to experience new forms and genres through exposure to an increasingly diverse world of music.

Q: What would the Harvard program be like?
A: College students will act as Music Unites Ambassadors, further spreading the word about Music Unites’ initiatives and programs. College representatives will help create music education awareness on campus and foster relationships with on-campus bands. This will be an opportunity for college students to gain experience as leaders and give back to their local community.

Q: What are some if the roles and responsibilities?
A: MU on Campus Reps will lead a Music Unites on Campus Club at their college. MU on Campus Reps can foster relationships with neighboring elementary schools and assist in the implementation of music education programs in their local community. MU Campus Reps are required to host two Music Unites events on campus per semester. Examples include: putting together a concert, Battle of the Bands, Campus Idol, Instrument Drive or Fundraiser, Artist Competitions, or a Youth Choir.

Q: What are you looking for in an applicant?
A: Music Unites Applicants must be either an undergraduate or graduate college student, must be passionate about music and music education, and must be looking to gain some philanthropic experience.

Q: Are there any upcoming events in the Boston Area?
A: In late March Music Unites Emerson will be hosting an Empowering Women through Music event with Rachel Platten and Bess Ross (from Ingrid Michelson). It will be located at Emerson College, and we will have more information as the date approaches.
