Five Easy Healthy Habits to Adopt This Semester

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Harvard chapter.

With the new year underway, it’s time to really consider the new year’s resolutions that you might have set for yourself. We all set them, whether by writing them down and hanging them on our walls or by merely thinking them. Most resolutions are very ambitious and don’t get carried out throughout the entire year, but there are some resolutions that when phrased in the right way are very doable. One of these is to stay healthy in college, maybe even just for this next semester. I know I am one of these college students that have vowed to really take better care of my body. Here’s a list of a few simple things to include in your journey to better health in college:

1. Take vitamins daily.

Let’s face it, staying nutritious in college is hard. With our incredibly busy schedules, it’s impossible to eat a well balanced meal three times a day. Vitamins are a quick and easy way to make sure that we are getting the different nutrients that we need on a daily basis. I have never taken vitamins in my life but before coming back from winter break, I made sure to pack my first ever bottle of vitamins to take in college. I’ll update y’all a few weeks later to see what impact they’ve had on me but the internet tells me that they’re a good thing to add to your daily morning and night routines.

2. Drink tons of water.

When I was a freshman, I decided to cut out sodas from my diet when in the dining hall and I’ve grown a love of water. I carry around a water bottle with me everywhere I go and it’s an easy way for me to stay healthy. Drinking the recommended amount of water a day comes with many benefits such as helping out your skin and digestive system. So if you haven’t already jumped on the water bottle trend, what are you waiting for?

3. Set a bedtime for yourself.

Everyone always tells you that sleep is important. That’s because it really is! One of the easiest and best ways to take care of your body is by getting enough sleep every night. I know this can tricky when it comes to midterm season and the long haul up to finals, but above all, this shouldn’t be the thing you sacrifice for your grades. With better time management, it is possible to get everything done before it’s time to get to bed and get enough beauty sleep every night.

4. Create a morning and night routine and stick to it.

Routines are the keys to success. Okay, that may be a pretty bold statement but they can sure help on your way to a healthier life. We all have morning and night routines, but it could be useful to add in a few new things to them for the new semester such as taking a daily vitamin or moisturizing your face before bed. Little things like that can make a big difference over time.

5. Write things down.

I end my list with a habit that can help with our mental health. As busy collegiettes, our minds are always racing with the information that is taught to us and with all of the meetings that we juggle. In taking 5 minutes each night to write down all of our racing thoughts, we can better prepare ourselves for bed by having a clear head.

This a just a simple list of suggestions that you can implement in your own daily journey, but there are so many little things that people do to be healthier. I’m sure you have some of your own that you think improve your help more than these! Let us know what those habits are in the comments below so we can all share and encourage each other in this health journey together.
