Hampton University students are natural born leaders, and are conditioned while at the university on how to brand and present themselves to impress future employers. Starting freshman year, you are required to attend at least one career fair which is held in both the Fall and Spring semesters in the Student Center Ballroom or Convocation Center. You are taught how to dress in business professional attire, how to format and present your resume, and how to follow up with recruiters to secure a job or internship position.
The Career Center offers free resume critiques and resume building workshops, and they work to match you with opportunities that align with your goals, aspirations, and interests. They constantly send out emails promoting their free workshops, the different companies and organizations that are coming to Hampton looking to hire students, as well as fellowship opportunities.
Many majors require that students complete an internship before graduating, and they will work to get companies to come speak to those who are interested in taking advantage of the opportunities presented to them. Some major companies that have come to Hampton’s campus include: NBCUniversal, Google, Microsoft, Accenture, GEICO, NASA, and more! Pay attention to the emails, flyers, and postings in your respective schools for upcoming opportunities to speak with recruiters from these companies to secure your spot for an internship or future job!
Hamptonians have gone on to work for companies such as ESSENCE, EBONY, RevoltTV, the FBI, NBCUniversal, Google, Accenture, Deloitte, Bank of America, and more. Others have gone on to earn their Master’s and Doctorate degrees, but have always come back to offer opportunities to current Hamptonians.
A few words of advice? Stay ready so you don’t have to get ready! Always have your resume, cover letter, and firm handshake ready to go. Be ready to sell and promote yourself, and to work hard to get that job or internship of your dreams!
