Movies to Get You Stoked About Your Major

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Hamline chapter.

Movies have always been there to inspire the soul. They rouse action, emotion and a whole lot of tears. But what if they can inspire one of the biggest decisions of your life? Or at least get you excited about it? For all those on the fence about their major or maybe feeling like what’s the point, these movies can get you hyped.

Sciences and Mathematics:

There hasn’t been much excitement to clamber towards the space program, but the science and math savants get their love in the movie Hidden Figures. The powerful women featured in this movie show what science and math can build. Math is problem solving and that’s what these ladies do as they try and launch a rocket into space.

Business and Economics:

In The Intern, business is the only option for Ben and Jules who commit their whole lives to an online store. This movie will show the kind of heart and soul that goes into running your own business or being a part of a hard-working team of people inspired to make a brand. No matter if you’re into marketing, accounting or management, this movie will get you pumped.

Law:

If you’re going into Law or Criminal Justice, the gruel of school can seem endless. Thankfully, To Kill a Mockingbird has your back. This timeless tale shows the horrors of human nature and the need for lawyers like Atticus Finch who defended those no one else wants to defend. Besides, Scout can make anyone feel empowered about their major.

Global Studies:

Majors from Linguistics to Anthropology may find themselves pining for the adventures of Indiana Jones, but the movie Arrival can send chills down even the most downtrodden Global Studies major. Arrival follows a linguistics expert as she tries to unlock the language of an alien race who has just landed on Earth. This thrilling story can make Global Study majors want to prepare for an arrival of aliens or even study other cultures already here on Earth.

Media Studies:

Writing is an exciting career filled with sitting behind a desk and thinking about style and format until your eyes are burning from the computer screen. But in the movie Whisky Tango Foxtrot the lifestyle of a writer can be a high. Becoming a war zone reporter, Kim shows that journalism isn’t just sitting behind the desk, but taking action. Almost like writing for Her Campus Hamline!

Education:

Kids screaming in your ear can get irritating after a while. That’s why this major gets two movies. Dead Poets Society is a must watch for anyone, but when the students start standing on their desk for Mr. Keating, it can make any education major want to get back into their studies and touch children’s hearts. Mona Lisa Smile can also make a person’s inspiration hum with excitement. This movie follows an art history class and a teacher who tries to tell them it’s okay for the girls to follow any career or major they set their mind to.
