Breast Cancer Awareness Month

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Hamilton chapter.

Breast Cancer Awareness Month

In case you haven’t heard, October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month. Many companies donate profits, people dye their hair pink, NFL football players sport pink uniforms, and clubs hold fundraisers to support breast cancer awareness and research.

Some people argue that although the month raises awareness, it may not be as effective at raising funds. However, even awareness is an important part of lowering the rates of breast cancer. 200,000 women are diagnosed with breast cancer every year1 and early detection of breast awareness greatly increases the chances of survival. Mammograms are recommended every 2 years beginning at the age of 40 and younger women should pay attention to their bodies, noting if anything looks or feels unusual.

Look out for ways to support Breast Cancer Awareness Month and encourage the women around you to get screened for breast cancer.
