10 Easy Ways to Take a Study Break (without leaving the library!)

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Hamilton chapter.

It’s your millionth hour in the library.  Text is starting to blur in your textbooks, and your papers are beginning to sound like rambling gibberish.  There is no way you can possibly function if you continue on studying like this.  You need a break…But everyone else is cramming for exams in the library with you!  Have no fear—here are some simple study break ideas that you can do while camping out in your study area of choice!

1.     Download Beyonce’s new virtual album on iTunes, and take some time to admire the singer’s amazingness.

2.     The end of the near—of 2013, that is.  This means that tons of lists about the “Best” or “Worst of…” will be appearing around the web!  Need a movie to watch with your family when you get home?  Interested in which celebrities went the most crazy?  This can get you started: http://newsfeed.time.com/top-10-everything-of-2013/

3.     OK, be honest—you probably haven’t even thought about packing up your stuff for break yet.  Write a quick (possibly detailed) list of all the things you need to remember to bring home with you.  Still have time?  Make one for all the things you want to bring back up the Hill with you once break is over!

4.     Send out a text or Facebook message to your friends from home—find out how long they’re home for, and make plans to get together!  Thinking of the fun things ahead is great motivation to push through the awfulness of finals.

5.     Nothing says, “Procrastination” like Buzzfeed.  Read some hilarious posts, and cover your friends’ Facebook walls with them.  Hey, they need a distraction from work, too!

6.     Call your mom. Or dad. Or grandma. They will give you sympathy for your stress and probably fill you in on last-minute holiday details.

7.     Treat yourself to some quality time with Netflix or that TV show you’ve missed so many episodes of because of studying. You deserve it.

8.     Get up from your seat, and take a walk around your building.  Do some people watching.  Exercise = endorphins = happiness.

9.     Look up recipes holiday cocktails, like these from Red Envelope. http://www.redenvelope.com/blog/best-holiday-cocktails?ref=redorganicotherunkwn.  ‘Tis the season to be uber festive, right?  So many parties, so many drinks to try…

10. Take a nap, inconspicuously or conspicuously, at your desk.  The work isn’t going anywhere, and you’ll be refreshed and ready to hit the books once you’ve recharged. (…And everyone else is considering doing the same thing anyway.)
