Haute or Not? A Recap of New York Fashion Week’s Top 15.

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at GWU chapter.

Public service announcement: it’s September. Yes, I know, thank you Captain Obvious. But do you know what the month of the Pumpkin Spice Latte really means? If not, then it’s about time to get out from that rock you’ve been living under and get with the program!

Earth to fashion lovers everywhere: September is the month of unparalleled Big Apple traffic, drop dead gorgeous get-ups and, apparently, the increasing celebrity of the Kardashian Klan. September is the month of Proenza Schouler, Marchesa and Jenny Packham. September is the month when Candice Swanepoel can manage to gracefully fall on the Givenchy runway, Kanye can drop jaws with season 2 of Yeezy and Drake can sassily refer to Anna Wintour as his bae (let’s be real, Drake, everyone knows you’re with Serena.) Quite frankly, September just rocks! So, with my imaginary Louboutins on my feet and The Devil Wears Prada playing in the background, I’m here to dish on all the need-to-knows from the fashion-fueled saga that took over the streets of New York this past week. Without further ado, here’s the deal…

1. Fringe is in!

2. Sleeves? Oh, please… Off-the-shoulder tops just keep getting bigger, better and bolder!

3. “Florals? For Spring? Groundbreaking.” Well, it looks like designers everywhere didn’t give much credence to Miranda Priestly’s point of view on         flowers because they were everywhere! From Phillip Lim to Jenny Packham, the botanical gardens graced the catwalk.

4. Tory Burch combined her backhand and her impeccable taste for an unbeatable tennis wear collection! It looks like another big-time designer is embracing athleisure.

5. Proenza Schouler’s show was bananas. B-A-N-A-N-A-S. No…seriously, bananas inspired this show. With designs stealing inspiration from the preferred fruit of the monkey, the collection focused on pieces and materials that peeled away from the body. And it worked!

6. The Delpozo Spring 2016 Ready-to-Wear collection hit not just one, but two out of the park, fantastic, amazing, get-out-of-your-seat-and-cheer-until-you-no-longer-can stylistic home runs. Can you say breathtaking? I can’t—I lost my voice.

7.  Tommy Hilfiger sent his bronzed models out to dip their toes in the water and strut along the boardwalk in Rastafarian inspired garb. Hey Tommy, Ja-maican me crazy about your collection!

8. Star-studded is an understatement. With Kendall Jenner (in my favorite dress from all of NYFW), Karlie Kloss, Lily Aldridge, Gigi Hadid and Jourdan Dunn, Diane Von Furstenberg knows how to make a boho-chic lineup that will have the couture world drooling.

9. Red-hot! With Jason Wu layering his ladies lips with poppin’ cherry red gloss and Michael Kors draping his models with the dramatic color—red is a must do this season!

10. Givenchy hit his show right on the nose…literally! His models were ready for a masquerade ball. They sported facemasks of lace applique or, wait for it…gold jewels! Just one question: where can I get one???

11. Kim Kardashian West’s belly bump was all the rage this Fashion Week. The big question: what will this new little tot’s name be? All I have to say is that if Kim and Kanye don’t decide to complete the compass with a newborn named South, I will be seriously disappointed. But, we’re talking about the Kardashian family here so you know there’s more: fashion guru Anna Wintour had the displeasure of sitting next to little North front row at Givenchy during a temper tantrum. Let’s just say Ms. Wintour wasn’t all too pleased. Now, the Vogue editor-in-chief wants to ban young children from Fashion Week. Can you blame her?

12. Mila Kunis would be proud! “That’s so 70s” was a trademark caption these past few days! From flared pants to chunky layers, designers such as Prabal Gurung and Dion Lee have us thinking that the disco era may be making its way back to mainstream fashion.

13. Color blocking may be all too passé, but the world’s top designers have reinvented the once-beloved trend. Revamped and renewed, everyone from Victoria Beckham to BCBG Max Azria included print blocking in their collections!

14. Leather is back (again!) and has never been better! The dramatic material may be the signature of Black Widow and other superheroes, but now you can look equally as fierce and fabulous as your favorite crime fighters.

15. If you like it then you should have put a bow on it! Ribbons made a splash in New York, appearing in various shows including that of Oscar de la Renta.

A lot of info, right? But jot down these trends in that fashion rulebook of yours and you’ll be ready to rock the back-to-school season with this year’s hottest looks, be fine-tuned to fashion faux pas and stay up to speed in the world of style. Now it’s time to tune into the live stream and see what London has in store!
