Music Artists Are People Too, And We Should Start Treating Them Like It

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Gustavus chapter.

Music artists go on tour around the world all the time. They are constantly away from their homes, their own beds, and sing to thousands of strangers every single night for months on end.

Many may think music artists have the “easiest job on the planet”, yet that is far from the truth. Have you ever looked into what a typical day for a full-time touring musician is like? If not, you should. To sum it up, it is crazy, and they hardly can “sit and chill out” as many seem to think.

A study by Love Music Help Musicians revealed that musicians and music industry professionals are three times more likely to suffer from depression than the general public.

Can you imagine putting yourself out there to the whole world, having to compete to be at the top of the charts, having to work long hours every day, and having to worry about your fans’ happiness before your own?

To me, this is just wrong. As a super fan of many music artists, I want nothing than for them to succeed, be able to express themselves, and be happy!

A few weeks ago, I was scrolling through Facebook and came across a post that stated that a popular music artist had to reschedule multiple shows on his year tour due to illness. My mind was blown when I saw the comments on this post. This artist’s “fans” were posting comments like,

“Wow, I can’t believe the show is rescheduled. This is so inconvenient.”

“Why would they cancel the show just for the artist being sick?”

“This is so annoying. I’m going to sell my tickets now.”

Okay, first of all, I doubt any of these people would want to get up in front of thousands of people and perform while they are sick. All anybody wants to do when they are sick is lay in their own bed at home, and these music artists can’t even do that. I also guarantee that if this music artist got up on stage and performed that there would have been people complaining about how he/she sounded and performed during the show. It honestly just blows my mind that their “fans” actually expect them to perform a show when they feel like shit? Wouldn’t you want them to be feeling well and happy and be able to put on a great show? I would think so anyway.

Music artists are not a prop, a robot, or a doll. MUSIC ARTISTS ARE PEOPLE TOO, JUST LIKE YOU. They have feelings, responsibilities, a family, worries, and occasional illnesses just like you. So, you should cut them some slack and honestly be a real fan.
