College Cooking: Hacks For a Dorm Kitchen

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Gustavus chapter.
With finals coming up, people usually turn to things that’ll distract them. Netflix or finally doing their two-week-old laundry are just a couple of things that might help stress levels go down. Baking is another great stress reliever when you want to avoid those papers and have a little reward for all the hard work you’ve been doing (or not doing). However, what happens when you go to your dorm kitchen and all you have are a bowl, a pot and some cupcake tins?

Improvising is what college students do best, so here’s a little brownie recipe that’ll work with the odd supplies that you do have (if you’re lucky enough to have real measuring cups and spoons, the exact measurements are here, too!):

Chocolatey Brownies

½ cup of butter

1 full coffee mug, or an 8 oz container of sugar (1 cup)

2 eggs

1 small spoonful or 3 drops of vanilla (1 teaspoon)

6 heaping spoonfuls of unsweetened cocoa powder (1/3 cup)

Half a coffee mug or half of your Tupperware container of all-purpose flour (1/2 cup)

A little bit of salt (1/4 teaspoon)

The edge of the spoon (1/4 teaspoon)

Make sure to turn on your oven to 350 degrees. Mix all of your dry ingredients (flour, salt, baking powder, sugar, and cocoa) together in any bowl that is available; if a bowl isn’t available a pot will work just fine.

In a separate bowl, melt the butter and mix it with the eggs and vanilla. After this is done, find a clean spoon and beat in the dry mix that you previously set aside.

Now, find a tin that is oven safe; cupcake tins work perfectly for this as well. Then, use either use cooking spray or butter so the batter won’t stick.

Finally, stick those brownies in the oven for around 25-30 minutes and voilà! Feel free to add frosting for some extra de-stress goodness!
