5 Shows to Binge-Watch on Netflix this Valentine’s Day

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Guelph chapter.

So Valentine’s Day is a thing. A thing that happens every year. And honestly, most years I wind up by myself, chilling in bed, eating snacks, and watching Netflix. But not everyone is as blessed with the (very) single life. So to help you, your friends, or your bae decide what to watch this V-Day (if you’re not going on a “romantic date”), here’s a quick guide to the best Netflix shows to binge-watch when February 14th rolls around. Happy Netflix-and-Chilling and may the post-V-Day discounted chocolate be ever in your favour!!!

Watching with your Valentine: The Office

Okay yeah Valentine’s Day can be EXPENSIVE and stressful and sometimes you just don’t feel like living that life. Girl, I get it. So kick back, relax, get into some sweats (with maybe some cute underwear underneath ;)), order way too much Chinese food and choose your favourite episodes of The Office.

Granted, this is not your typical rom-com. But The Office is seriously the best. You have the Pam-Jim flirtation (spoiler alert: also the part where they fall in love!!!!!!), the Dwight-Angela weird thing they have going on, and also just plain old Michael Scott. How can you ever pass up watching an episode of this show? Also, if you two get a little “distracted”, the show is easy to catch up on, so it’s perfectly fine if you miss an episode… or two.

Watching with your Galentine: Don’t Trust the B**** in Apartment 23

You and your best friend are both single this year? Perfect!!! Pop some popcorn, open a fresh pack of Oreo’s, even get out the carrots and hummus if you’re feeling motivated to remain healthy, and binge on some Don’t Trust the B**** in Apartment 23.

Since we live in a cruel world, Parks and Rec is not on Canadian Netflix. This just means that we have to settle with something almost as good. Don’t Trust the B**** in Apartment 23 is sassy and perfect for some girl time. There are only two seasons of this show, but that just means that you can probably fit all of the episodes into less than 9 hours, which may be aggressive, but that also sounds like a perfect day spent with your gals to me.

Watching By Yourself: Community

Don’t give AF about Valentine’s Day? Just hanging out by yourself? Too lazy to do anything? Valentine’s Day has all this stigma to either be single and hate the holiday or be in a relationship an love the holiday. What if you just don’t care and want to have a regular old day, spent doing your usual activities such as procrastinating, avoiding responsibilities, and feeling a little guilty for not showering for the third day in a row but not guilty enough to actually work up the motivation to actually do it? Watching Community is definitely the way to go.

Community is quirky, with a mix of “what the heck is going on” and “how have I not seen this show already”. It has some of the weirdest moments on television and some of the funniest moments on television. Only the first four seasons are on Netflix, but don’t worry, those are the best ones. Community can distract you from all the Valentine’s Day celebrations because it has so many of its own weird love triangles and random romance that you’ll be too busy wondering who Britta is in love with this episode to think about your own love life.

Watching with Your Mom: The Crown

Hey if no one else wants to hang out with you, at least your mom will, right???? That’s what I tell myself at least. Your mom is your rock, your friend, and your biggest fan. So she will probably have no issue spending Valentine’s Day with her daughter.

The Crown is the best. It’s got drama, beautiful costumes, amazing acting, and most importantly, accents! Based off the mom I know the best (my own), mothers love period dramas and this one does not disappoint. Queen Elizabeth II was, and still is, one of the coolest ladies ever. Chronicling her early years as the Queen of the UK, watching The Crown is bound to be a great time for both you and your #1 pal this Valentine’s Day.

Watching with that Tinder Match You Probably Shouldn’t Have Invited Over because That Means You Have Clean Your Room and Maybe Put On Some Make Up and Give a Heads Up to Your Housemates and Just Expend Some Effort: Friends

So this is weird. You invited a someone over that maybe you didn’t really know that well but felt this pressure to hang out with someone on Valentine’s Day but it’s also weird because they’re a stranger and you’re hanging out with a stranger on Valentine’s Day and you don’t know how to feel about it and you just kind of feel some regret now but it’s too late to cancel. Yeah maybe this is a little weird. So when in doubt, put on some Friends.

Who doesn’t love Friends? If they don’t, please kick them out of your house. They probably don’t like dogs either. Friends is perfect because it’s so neutral and you can literally choose any episode that you want to put on without needing a lot of backstory. And if there’s some uncomfortable silence, just pull a Joey Tribbiani and ask how they’re doing.

Obsessed with animals, snacks and nature. Enjoys riding horses, watching obscene amounts of Netflix and singing very poorly.
