Pop Princess’s Return to the Spotlight

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at GSU chapter.

Joanna Levesque, known as “JoJo,” has been my favorite artist since I was like five-years-old. No joke, JoJo has always been there. Every break up. Every tough time. Every heartache. She’s been there. Her lyrics always made sense to me and her melodies always hit the right spots of my soul.

Her debut album JoJo came out in 2004 when that sassy, yet soulful songstress’ voice captivated me and her lyrics inspired me. In her second album The High Road, Jojo showed her maturity as an artist, still a teen, yet “grown” in her ways. I was at that point in my life too, not a girl, but not yet a woman.

Going through middle and high school, I tried to figure out why JoJo wasn’t releasing a new album or a new single. I felt like I needed her music to guide me through my life! As I dug deep through the internet, I found out some troubling news in her Twitter feed. Her label, Blackground Records, had her under contract and she couldn’t release any music. She struggled to get from under them, and on July 30, 2013, it was reported that JoJo had filed a lawsuit against Blackground Records for “irreparable damages to her professional career”. In December, 2013, both of JoJo’s and Blackground Record’s attorneys agreed to drop the case as both parties came to an agreement outside of court. On January 14, 2014, it was officially announced that JoJo was released from her multi-year battle with the label and signed a new recording contract with Atlantic Records.

Her music ignites the cool girl, powerful, fierce conqueror in me. From her classics, like “Leave (Get Out)” and “Too Little Too Late,” to her lesser known songs, like “All I Want Is Everything”, she literally has a song for everything. I strongly encourage you all to buy her new album MAD LOVE (it literally dropped today)and let her sultry and sweet voice carry you through your work week, studying, partying and chilling.

Here’s my ultimate JoJo playlist:
