Who does not love the convenience of an on-call stylist when your hair depends on it?

That is exactly what the Colour app is here for! Colour is described as “uber for your hair”. This personal styling service offers you highly trained professionals who specialize in African- American hair textures and all of us with textured hair know just how special our follicles are. But one may ask, why color and why not just book an appointment with a beauty salon? The answer to this is simple, curated convenience. Colour’s mission is to do more than offer hair stylists on the go, but their biggest goal is to redefine the hair care industry as a whole.

The idea for Colour began at the hands of two Harvard Alumna Debra Shigley and Stephanie Belcher who are now the co-founders of the hair app. The women not only had a passion for the beauty industry but wanted to service African American communities in the area of feeling beautiful without having to make so many accommodations to do so. Shigley first birthed the idea of Colour when she was a young lawyer who would wait for hours in the beauty shop for something as simple as a wash and set (we feel your pain girl) and from there the mom of four collaborated with Belcher. Both women have amazing passions not only for beauty but for business which is an important characteristic to have for any start up company.

However, on March 23, 2017 the ladies of Colour and some of their most talented stylists created the Colour Campus Takeover, inaugurating the event on the campus of Georgia State University. The first 100 people to sign up for this event would not only get to meet the curators of Colour but would also get their hair styled at no cost. Yes, you read that correctly the college clients were able to get their hair styled at no cost! The only requirement was that they would wash their hair so that it was product free and ready for styling.

30 plus collegiates entered Dahlberg Hall to not only the sounds of blowdryers and hair products, but were welcomed with fun snacks, a live DJ, chocolate milk and four on campus organizations. Georgia State’s very own Her Campus, Empowher, College Girls Rock, Inc. and African Student Association were present to take part in the festivities to welcome and embrace our textured hair attendees. Each organization had something different to offer each attendee which made the event even more special.

What was probably the most beautiful thing about this entire function was that the purpose of Colour was being fulfilled. As African American women, we often get told so many stories about our hair from it being “too thick” to “unmanageable” and to have an app specifically for our convenience and peace of mind makes the entire concept worth the download. To add to the beauty of the event, each organization in attendance was able to mingle with one another and enjoy the attendees’ company, talk about true girl power!
