Her Campus: Why did you choose to attend Georgia State University?

Emily Dell: Well, I originally attended Georgia Southern University and it was a lot of fun but I felt like I wasn’t getting enough out of my college experience. It was a big party school and I felt like I needed something more serious. I remember being in Business class and realizing that there was nowhere for me to get an internship or grow. I decided that Atlanta was a great place to go to because of the opportunities and also being closer to my parents was a bonus.

Her Campus: How was the transition from Georgia Southern to Georgia State?

Emily Dell: It was a complete 180.  Southern’s campus has a lot of lakes and grass.  I used to ride a bike without having to worry about locking it and then I came to Atlanta and it was very different if I’m being honest. I remember going to my first accounting exam and seeing all of the homeless people and I would walk on the opposite side of the street because I was so scared. I know it sounds so suburban of me but coming from a place where I could leave my bike unlocked during classes to having to worry about my safety was a culture shock. Don’t get me wrong, I love the campus but it was hard to adjust.

Her Campus: What helped you transition into Georgia State?

Emily Dell: When I came to Georgia State I knew my roommate and one other person that I went to high school with. I liked my roommate but we were very different people.  The biggest thing that helped me transition was joining my sorority, Alpha Omicron Pi and all of my sisters have been the most helpful with my transition. I found people who were like me and that I could get along with which was awesome. If it weren’t for greek life I would not have any friends and have no idea what to do.

Her Campus: What is your favorite memory of Georgia State?

Emily Dell: My favorite memory would be studying abroad this past summer in Italy. I am Italian and I actually changed my major from Business to Economics so that I could minor in Italian, which I was really excited about. I met other students and got to visit my family that lives there.  I’m even going back again this summer. Studying Abroad is amazing and I think everyone should do it.

Her Campus: What are your favorite things to do around Atlanta?

Emily Dell: I like going to Piedmont Park and going to the hill on 10th street because it has the best view. Sweet Auburn Market is on campus and it’s the cutest little place. I feel like not a lot of people know about it. There are so many places to get good food and fresh produce.  At nighttime, I like to go to Buckhead and there’s a place called “Genki Sushi” that is amazing and it’s also cheap! Edgewood is also pretty cool.

Her Campus: What is one thing you wish people knew about you?

Emily Dell: I wish people didn’t judge me before they meet me. Most people think that I’m mean before they meet me and then they’re actually surprised about how weird I can be. I know it sounds kind of cheesy but I really wish that people didn’t judge a book by its cover.
