Jasmyn Cornell is a Senior Theater and Journalism major with a minor in Music. She is a mover and shaker here at Georgia Southern who has held multiple leadership positions in the organizations she’s been a part of. She is a well-known presence in Eagle Nation because of the many esteemed positions and titles she has held on campus. She reigned as Miss Black and Gold, She served as the Georgia Southern Homecoming Queen, and she is currently serving as the President of the Lambda Kappa Chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority Incorporated.

Because of her long history as a leader, I asked her what advice she had for young women who are looking to step into leadership roles in their organizations. Her response was simple, to the point, and helpful; she believes that the best way to move up into leadership, is to have a plan and have a solid reason for wanting whatever position you’re after. Often times, people pursue leadership simply for the title, but Jasmyn believes that this is the wrong way to go (and quite honestly, I agree with her). Once your reason for seeking leadership is established, the next step, according to Ms. Cornell, is to be prepared for whatever the position you are seeking will entail and to be knowledgeable on what it will take to achieve it. She believes that a woman who is prepared is unstoppable and a force to be reckoned with (and once again, I agree).

I was intrigued by Jasmyn’s choice of major, so I asked her what her reason was for choosing these two majors.

“I’ve always wanted to be an actress, and I did plays all throughout high school…and even when I was in elementary school.”

When she told me this, the theater kid inside me lit up (lol). We talked a little bit about our love for theater and acting, before exploring what made her choose Journalism for her second major. She explained that although she is interested in Journalism, it’s more of a backup plan because acting is her real passion. Jasmyn’s dream job is to become an actress; she would be happy to act in film, theater, or television; she just wants to act! Jasmyn is working hard to turn her dreams into reality, and I think her dedication is something that we can all learn from.

Jasmyn is entering the final days of her college career, so it seemed only right for me to ask her what’s next for her and what she wants the next few years of her life to look like. Her answer to these questions went right along with her dream. In the days following her graduation, Jasmyn hopes to either enter the exciting and fast-paced film industry or work with a small news station as an anchor.

The late, great Walt Disney once said, “All our dreams can come true, if we have the courage to pursue them.” Jasmyn Cornell is the embodiment of this quote, she is actively working to turn her dreams into reality by wholly pursuing them. Her dedication and determination are things we can all learn from.
