How I became Dr. Design

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Georgia Southern chapter.

It’s story time guys…

I grew up in a strong Christian household. We HAD to go to church every Sunday and bible study every Wednesday. My sister and I could listen certain music or watch certain shows. And my mom most certainly did not believe in Halloween, but the one time she let me participate in Halloween activities was in Pre-K for the class Halloween party and she dressed me up as a little doctor.

I say all of this some things into perspective. For as long as can remember I’ve always been encouraged to be a doctor, and to be fair, I guess a part of me wanted it also. However, I got to a point where I realized that even though I looked forward to helping others, the main things that made that career path attractive to me was the amount of money I’d be making and the praise I’d get just for holding such a title.

Afterwards, I kind of went through a little identity crisis and it’s something that continues from time to time now. When I started taking college classes I was on a pre-med track. I’ve since changed my major three times from biomedical engineering to mechanical engineering to graphic design. Each has its own background story and allowed to change and grow into the young lady I am now.

I have no regrets, I don’t blame the way I raised for pursuing something when I had no real desire, and I have no shade towards anyone who is pursuing a medical degree. I just encourage that you enjoy what you’re pursuing.
