Conquering Stress: How I Destress

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Georgia Southern chapter.

Everyone becomes stressed at one time or another, but no one should remain stressed. Life can be stressful, especially when it seems as if nothing is going how you would like it or when you are trying to manage so much at once. When I feel myself merging into that position, I stop and do things that help clear my mind.

  • Drink Tea. I do not know what it is about a cup of hot herbal tea, but it does a good job at calming the nerves. Whether I have a cup to start the day or to end it, I am left feeling much better. Peppermint is my go-to.
  • Clean Up. If my room is a mess, then my mind is a mess. I feel at peace when my room is clean and everything is tidy. This allows me to think much better.
  • Write. Writing is a great way to clear your mind. When I have a lot going on, sometimes I take a minute to journal whatever is on my mind. Anybody can write, and that is what’s so great about it. Relaxing and satisfying. Writing is the top peacemaker in my world.
  • Shower. Taking a nice, steaming hot shower is so relaxing to me. Following with a body scrub and moisturizing afterwards is the cherry on top. This is my way of washing off the day’s stress. A clean body is a happy soul.
  • Watch a Show or Movie. This is probably one of the easiest ways I get my mind off things. It’s better to watch another person deal with their troubles on TV than to deal with my own.
  • Talk to Friends. Having hilarious, encouraging friends is a blessing. I know exactly who I can hit up to relieve my mind. There’s nothing like being surrounded by good company that will help you forget about what’s stressing you out.
  • Uncover the Problem. I admit, a lot of times I stress myself out. I’m stressed when I don’t have to be. If I identify what the problem is, I can work to stop it or improve. For instance, if it’s a test, I know that if I study better and do my best to comprehend the information there is no reason to stress. If the problem is a person or persons, that may take a bit more action and maybe even some “cutting off” if there is still no solution after trying to communicate and take necessary steps with the guilty parties. No one is worth stressing over. Depending on what is causing my stress at the moment, I can possibly put an end to it at once.
  • Pray. For me, this is the best thing I can do. The best feeling happens when I willingly surrender all my troubles, worries and everything else that contributes to my stress. I feel my absolute best after praying. There is nothing else like it.
