10 Things All College Students Should Have in Their Dorm

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Georgia Southern chapter.

Throughout college you realize there are a few things you should have bought early on. Some things you probably decided that you’ll buy if you really need it, I’m here to tell you that you do really need it! And you should have bought it then! Anyways, here are the top 10 things that every college student absolutely needs in their dorm/apartment.

1.Tool Box

Things are going to break, and it will absolutely suck when you can fix it because you can’t find a tool. A simple toolbox with 2 screwdrivers, a hammer, a wrench, duct tape, and some tape measure will make a big difference. You’ll be able to hang things up, put up some curtains, fix the couch that you broke (and didn’t tell your landlord about because you were afraid).

2. Crockpot

Crockpots are great because they make cooking so much easier, and you can make absolutely anything in one! You can crockpot mac ‘n cheese, chili, spaghetti, brisket, taco meat, cake— like I said, absolutely anything. It is also great if you have to be out all day. Most recipes have an 8 hour cook time. So if you place all you ingredients in you crockpot at 10am, dinner is done by 6pm.

3. Angry Mama Microwave Cleaner

You roommates are nasty. Make cleaning up after them a little less nasty.

4. Fitted Mattress Cover

I don’t think we thought about how many people have been sleeping on our beds for so many years. Protect yourself and get a mattress cover. Keep those gross stranger germs from the past at bay!

5. Bed Risers With Outlets

As much as I loved dorm life, I hated that there was never enough outlets in my room. That led to me stringing power strips across the floor, and constantly tripping on it. Make your life easier, and just get a set of these.

6. Portable Fan

I’m not sure why, but my room was either too hot in the summer, or also… too hot in the winter. It was bad. Having a small fan to cool down with was probably my saving grace.

7. Portable Charger

Portable Chargers are great because you can use it while you’re on the bus to class, maybe waiting for financial aid to give you your money, or just whenever you might need it. Just don’t forget to charge it too!

8. Mini Projector

Gone are the days of trying to Netflix and Chill on that tiny ass 16 inch laptop screen! With a projector you’ll be able to watch movies easier, or use it as an additional screen when studying.

9. Storage Ottomans

Dorms never had enough seating for me or my friends. An easy solution that my mom gave me is to use a storage ottoman. These can come in many different styles sizes, but the most important part is to get one that has the top that can support seating. The extra storage is great for storing things life bags, laundry supplies, or anything really. There’s also cute DIY you can do to make it with milk crates, and save a few bucks!

10. Planner

I have literally used an agenda since I was in 2nd grade. Having one place to keep all of your assignments, to-dos, checklists, and notes has been a necessity in my life. Even a simple planner to write down due dates is great because those sort of things will never surprise you, and it make you feel a little more like an adult.
