Book Review: Anna and the French Kiss Trilogy

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Georgetown chapter.

Anna and the French Kiss

Personally, what I found most enjoyable about this novel were the small details. Anna’s father is a successful romance author who crafts stories about relationships yet does not know how to form a meaningful bond with his daughter. Anna thinks that he sent her off to Paris because he had other things to do with his time. Also, Anna’s overly neat room and inability to speak French gave her depth and real life personality traits. In regards to her character, another element I appreciated was Anna’s interest in films. Her goal is to become a female movie critic, breaking the glass ceiling in place in that particular industry. Perkins’s inclusion of quick one liners and witty dialogue in addition to an intriguing plot, made this a must read book for anyone interested in Young Adult romance. Anna and St. Clair are great characters you can’t help but root for.

Lola and the Boy Next Door

When I finished Lola and the Boy Next Door, I went back and marked the line, “And if I’m the stars, Cricket Bell is the entire galaxies.” Perkins writes so well and engrosses the reader in her world. Lola is quirky, wearing wigs and over the top outfits (due to her own interest in becoming a fashion designer). While I won’t write spoilers, I will note that Lola has a special kind of family that is so much fun to read. Her fathers are wonderful characters in their own right and demonstrate what a talented writer Perkins truly is. The minor characters in this story were just as appealing as Lola and Cricket.

Isla and the Happily Ever After

Unlike the other two stories, Isla and Josh don’t have any hurdles to overcome other than themselves. Their characters are completely realistic and representative of dilemmas people actually face. As a reader, there is nothing worse than a contrived plot or scenario. Both Isla and Josh are well written characters that a reader cannot help but root for their successes. Josh is an aspiring writer and painter, penning his own comic book about his life, and Isla plans to attend a prestigious university. They both like one another, but is the timing right? In this novel, I also appreciated the fact that these two characters, Isla and Josh, meet in Paris and see each other again in New York. Lola took place entirely in San Francisco, while Anna occurred in Paris. It was a nice touch to add another location to the series.

While all three novels are romance stories, each offers a unique story with various plots and characters. Each takes place in a different location, Paris, San Francisco, and New York with realistic characters who are well developed. All three books are worth reading!
