17 Painfully Cliché Things Every Georgetown Freshman Should Do First Semester

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Georgetown chapter.

It’s hard to believe it, but the semester is almost over.  Before it ends, make sure you get to experience every clichéd first semester freshman moment for yourself.

1. Go to the monuments.  You probably went during NSO, but now that you know more about your floormates than their names and schools (and you’re sure you like them) go again.  You won’t regret it, and if you go at night all your friends from home will look at your Instagrams and be really impressed that you’re so good at living in DC.

2. Spend all your laundry money on Corp coffee and vending machine snacks.  Because Saxby’s seems so far and you’ve already used up all your Flex dollars.

3. Go to Yates at 11:30.  Because fitness can’t wait, but your English paper can

4. Play ultimate frisbee with your floor on Kehoe until they turn the lights off.

This is especially great when you’re all getting to know each other, but a really intense game of ultimate never gets old.  It’s also a surprisingly good workout if your teams are small.

5. Go to Baked and Wired.  Go.  Now.

6. Spend an entire day in the library.  If adopting a cubicle in Lau for six hours, and turning it into a makeshift home hasn’t been part of your freshman experience yet, I’d love to trade schedules because you’re living an unbelievably good life.

7. Give someone terrible directions on campus.  “Healy Hall?  Yeah, it’s the big one… in the front.”

8. Take advantage of half-price Qdoba Tuesdays.  If you go before six, the line isn’t even that long.  And drinks are free if you show them your GoCard.  It’s sort of amazing.

9. Have a long political discussion in the common room.  So Georgetown it hurts.

10. Wake up at 3 AM to go see someone famous speak.  We’re so lucky to have diplomats, politicians, writers, scientists, and celebrities come to lecture every week.  Don’t miss out!  They’re not all Kevin Spacey and Hillary Clinton (although the last two weeks would suggest otherwise) but they are all brilliant, ultra successful people who are happy to share their experiences with students.

11. Get to know your professors.  They’re your best resources; go to office hours, ask questions in class, don’t be afraid to show your interest in their area of expertise.  You never know what professional and intellectual doors it could open.

12. Become best friends with your chaplains in residence.  They are here to help you, and chances are they are also really really cool.  Plus, you’ve been eating their guacamole every week for a while now…

13. Go to a basketball game.  No explanation needed.

14. Take a picture of the view from Leavey Esplanade.  And then spend some time up there just thinking about how beautiful our school is.

15. Travel in an enormous group to a party where you don’t actually know the hosts.  Because nothing says super fun Saturday night like a bunch of overdressed, confused freshmen.

16. Take pictures of yourself and all your friends in Georgetown shirts.  And then make every caption and album title lyrics from the fight song.

17. Learn the fight song.  I mean really, how long’s it been???
