My guess is by now you have at least heard of “Pillow Talk”, Zayn Malik’s first single after his infamous departure. While Zayn was always portrayed as the moody and edgier member of the group, his new music video literally screams “I am not affiliated with One Direction anymore!” by including:
1. Him making out with his new supermodel girlfriend, Gigi Hadid
2. Him and Gigi with blood coming out of their eyes
3. Naked women boxing and even a casual F word slipped in the chorus to give him just enough of that “bad boy” edge
I’ll be the first person to admit that I was a huge One Direction fan for my underclassmen years of high school. Although my love for them tapered away as I got older and their fans got younger, I was still annoyed when Zayn not only left the group, but also proceeded to become that annoying celebrity on Twitter that starts petty drama with other celebrities for favorites and retweets.
I originally heard about the video and was disgusted with the idea. Why do so many band-member-turned-solo artists feel like they have to sex up their image to try and win over the “older crowd”? However, after watching the video I was really impressed. Strangely enough, it was really artistic, aesthetically pleasing, and didn’t feel like that “forced” sexual content that many artists try to do to separate themselves from their previous younger fans. I’ve got to hand it to him, it seems like he may become the next JT.
Like it or not, new (yet not quite improved) Zayn is here to stay and although his recent behavior has been iffy, I’m still going to be one of the first people to preorder his album #sorrynotsorry!
