Why New York City Should Be On Your Semester Bucket List

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at George Mason University chapter.

If you’re like me and have been saying you’ve wanted to make it up to the city—grab a friend, get a ticket and end your semester off with a fun adventure to the city that never sleeps. If you need more to convince you, here are 5 reasons why a trip to New York City is always a good idea.

1. Site Seeing. The City is home to iconic landmarks, whether it’s Time Square, Central Park or the Statue of Liberty. Even the city skyline is a landmark in itself. It’s the perfect setting for a selfie for an Instagram post that will definitely get fifty plus likes!

2. Quality Food. In NYC there’s food of every kind and on every corner.  If you’re eating from a rooftop in the Upper East Side or from a food truck in Midtown–the food usually does not disapoint. If you’re a Food Network fan, you could even pop in to one of the restaurants featured on Diners, Drive-Ins and Dives; it’s a guarantee that your meal will be phenomenal, since it was up to Guy Fieri’s standards.

3. Museums. There’s no shortage of Museums throughout Manhattan where you can spend hours meandering through the Museum of Modern Art or the Metropolitan Museum. If you hang out in Chelsea or Soho you’ll find numerous art exhibits and smaller galleries that provide a more intimate feel.

4. Shopping.  There’s a four-story Forever 21 in Times Square. Need I say any more? Why not take a day trip to shop till you drop in one of the fashion capitals of the world? New York City is home to all your favorites stores as well as stores like Topshop that you can only find in select locations.

5. It’s nearby. If you’re thinking that it’s too much of a hassle–it’s really not! Living in the DMV makes NYC easily accessible, even on a college budget. There are charter buses that cost as little as $29.00 round-trip for the day. Some of us are only in the area for four years, so why not take advantage of the location. Mason even gives the opportunity to earn potential class credit through the ArtBus trips organized by the School of Art.  Check out the information on the Artbus trips here: http://artsbus.gmu.edu/.
