Top Three Not so Typical Rainy Day Essentials

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at George Mason University chapter.

To my dismay, it has been raining for the past week in Fairfax. I thrive off of sunny weather, so this rain is setting me back a few steps. However, being a busy student I have to ignore my instincts of wanting to jump back into bed and proceed on with my day.

Many of us have our essentials of a raincoat, boots and umbrella to make our treks through the rain, but I have other things that help me get through this dreary weather. Figuring out what helped me get through this wretched weather made it so much more bearable. Even though I would like for my essentials should be my down comforter and pillow, I have a more productive clear list that gets me past the rain clouds.

Without fail, I have to have a cup of coffee everyday. But, in this weather, coffee instantly jazzes up my rainy day. Whether it be in the morning, middle of the afternoon, or midnight, a cup of this sweet goodness is essential to combat the pouring rain. Its warm, bold and sweet, perking me up when the clouds are trying to bring me down. Adding special touches of vanilla, extra sugar or when I’m feeling really audacious, straight pressed black coffee. And I’d like to add that French pressed coffee is always the way to go.

Next comes the music. On any given sunny day I’m usually listening to Foster the People, Spoon or any “happy” song; yet, the rain instantly transform my tastes. Catch me in the rain walking to class and it is almost a given that I am listening to Jazz or Swing music. I don’t know what it is, but it gives me the warmth that the sun couldn’t provide me with. I highly recommend Miles Davis, Ella Fitzgerald, Michael Buble, Billie Holiday and I can’t forget Frank Sinatra. Smiling while these classic tunes play make me want to dance in the puddles.

Candles have a significant connotation towards romantic involvements, but the only romantic involvement that I participate in on a rainy day is with my books. Candles pick up my spirits filling the air in my room with scents of apples, vanilla or anything to my liking. Currently I ignite my pink pomegranate lemonade candle, but since it is dwindling down I will be purchasing this candied sugar plum candle to celebrate the winter holidays right around the corner.

Even though most us would like to hibernate during this rainy time, those three tricks will prevent you from hiding yourself away from the rain.
