Keeping Up With Your Resolutions

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at George Mason University chapter.

February is just starting up, which means it’s time to finally make some progress on those New Year’s resolutions you scribbled on a notebook and swore you’d keep. If you’re anything like me, you kept those resolutions for all of two weeks. While it is easy to loose sight of your goals, it’s easier to meet them than you think. Here are a few helpful hints I’ve come up with to make your 2015 resolutions last:

1. Write them down somewhere you look every day. It’s easy to ignore a thought in the back of your mind, but if you write it down on your calendar, agenda book, or even put it in your phone, that resolution won’t go unnoticed. Whether you’re aiming to eat healthier, work out more, learn a new makeup trick (I still haven’t mastered winged-eyeliner), or simply make more time for yourself, a written reminder will do so much more than you think.

2. Find a friend to keep you motivated. Keeping up with a resolution is hard to do on your own—but with a friend, you’re both bound to succeed! Find a gym partner or lunch buddy to help keep you on track if a better lifestyle is what you’re aiming for.

3. Set milestones for yourself. Meeting your goals doesn’t happen overnight. Set a calendar for each goal you’d like to meet, and see where you are this time next month. Plus, it will feel so good to check off small milestones before you reach your ultimate goal!

4. Journal your progress. You make improvements day by day without even realizing it. Use this time to reflect on your accomplishments, make improvements when necessary, or even set new goals for yourself. When you take the time to really become aware of yourself and your everyday actions, it is SO much easier to find motivation for positive change.

5. Make an inspiration board. Most people make resolutions in order to achieve something down the road. Creating a board of positive images, such as motivational quotes or pictures, can help you to focus and stay on top of your goals.

Remember, your resolutions are your own. They exist in order to better you, not to change yourself completely! Keep that in mind when reviewing them and make adjustments when necessary. Most importantly, have fun and get creative! All of the guidelines I’ve set out have the opportunity for a creative twist. A miserable approach to a resolution will yield miserable results, so do yourself a favor: be serious in achieving your goals, but don’t forget to have fun!
