It’s finally the spring semester, and most of us collegiettes are counting down until spring break. However, those warm sunny days are blocked by two of the coldest months of the year. Crawling back under the covers after checking the weather isn’t an option, so we have to adapt our beauty routines with the below freezing weather.  Here are a few tips that will help you cope.

Moisturize

Our skin takes a beating in the cold, so it’s important to treat it to some TLC. Moisturizing will help prevent that dry, itchy skin that can result from harsh, cold winds. After a warm (not hot, that dries your skin out more!) shower, apply a body cream or lotion to damp skin. This will help lock in the moisture best. Apply extra to hands and feet, and slip on some fuzzy socks to seal it all in. Next, use a facial moisturizer, and follow up with an eye cream. The eyes are the most sensitive part of the face, and often are the only thing exposed after we wrap ourselves up in hats and scarves.

Make-up

It may be tempting to forgo all make-up in favor of a ski-mask, but a little make-up can help brighten the face. In lieu of your regular foundation, opt for a BB cream. This will provide light to medium coverage, while also providing you with some extra moisture and sun protection. Even in the dead of winter, sunscreen is still important! Skip setting powder, as it can make your skin look dry. Next, use a cream blush to create a natural flush. Use waterproof mascara, since harsh winds can cause your eyes to water. Finish with a tinted lip balm, which will help soothe cracked lips while also giving you some color.

Hair

Being a get-up and go type of gal can be a struggle during the winter. Long gone are the days when we can dash out of the dorm with damp hair. Below freezing temps can actually cause damp hair to freeze, which can cause breakage. Give yourself enough time in the morning to properly dry your hair before venturing outside. Letting your hair air dry is ideal, since high heat from the blow dryer can dry out hair even more. However, if you’re in a time crunch, use the lowest heat setting on your hair dryer as possible, and always use a heat protectant. Before your jam on your slouch beanie, use a frizz control cream through your hair to help tame flyaways and prevent static.

Taking care of your hair and skin now will help you look your best come spring break. It’s only a matter of time before you’ll be poolside. Until then, enjoy the last few weeks of boot season!
