Campus Celebrity: Courtney Metcalf

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at George Mason University chapter.

Meet our latest Campus Celebrity: Courtney Metcalf. Courtney is a sophomore here at George Mason University. On top her of her many extracurricular activities, Courtney has a heart as a big as her passion for fashion.

Major?  Communications major, double minoring in media production and criticism, and conflict analysis and resolution.

Hometown? Thomasville, Georgia .

Career Goals? To be a backpack journalist, but not until I work for a fashion magazine to get my name out there, then I will be a freelance backpack journalist.

What are you involved with on campus? I am a Mason Ambassador, I am the Community Empowerment Research Coordinator for MasonU, I am an events intern in the Office of Admissions, and I am a member of an organization called the Amazon Wash, which is the Amazon’s water, sanitation, and hygiene project.

Tell me a little bit more about your work within the Amazon Wash Project? The Amazon Wash Project is an all-volunteer group of students who volunteer time to help build water filters for indigenous Maijuna community of the Amazon but, aside from building the water filters, we also host a sanitation workshop to teach these Maijuana people and to empower them to take the health of their community into their own hands. We teach them dental hygiene, bodily hygiene, and how to properly store food.

Tell me about your involvement in the HIV/Aids Awareness Fashion Show? This is my first year volunteering for the HIV/Aids Awareness Fashion Show that was last semester. I really enjoyed it because I am also a part of the GMU Fashion Society, and we partnered with PAC, Patriots Activity Council, to do the fashion to kind of make more people aware of HIV/Aids and the show was kind of an interactive show as well. We had facts about HIV and Aids as the models were going down the runway. Throughout the fashion show we would ask questions and had speakers from W.A.V.E.S come in and help educate us about the problem that is HIV/Aids.

Is this a subject you’re passionate about? I would say that I am passionate about just a lot of social issues in general. There are a lot of social issues that come up, so whenever an event comes up for an issue, I like to jump on it and just dibble and dabble. I’m definitely passionate.

How do you maintain all of your extracurricular activities and good grades for Deans List? I honestly don’t know. You never know how much you can take until you push yourself. I actually like to push myself and stretch myself really thin just to see what my breaking point is. I like to see how much I can handle and how much I can’t. You know, I like adding extracurricular activities, and as bad as it sounds, I won’t stop until I burn myself out, and only then, when I am burnt out, will I stop. I’m a very motivated and ambitious person.

Why did you choose Mason? I chose Mason because of the Washington Journalism and Media Conference. I attended in 2012, my junior year going into senior year of high school, and I fell in love with everything about the campus. That whole week, we did on campus and off campus activities, and that whole week, I kept saying, “I’m going to go here” and when it came time to apply, it was between another school and this school, and I only applied to Mason. Thank goodness I got in.

What is one interesting fact that people may not know about you? I’m very sapiosexual, meaning that I am attracted to intelligence. That’s a major thing I look for in a partner. Another interesting fact is that I would like to create my own raw denim line! Just wait on it, my raw denim will be coming soon. Hopefully Kayne will wear them because it will be so yeezy.

What is the one thing you want to achieve in your life that is not career related? I just want to do good in the world, and I know that is cliché and people say that a lot, but I really just want to help. As a conflict minor, I am so interested in why conflicts arise. Why do we have so many states at war right now? Why are civilizations crumbling? So, as a conflict analyzer, I want to help them get out of these states and you know, figure out how to help these civilizations grow and rebuild. Aside from that, I obviously want to get married and have children,

I am a sophomore at George Mason, studying Communications with a concentration in journalism. My main campus involvements include being a sister of Alpha Omicron Pi International sorority, Mason Ambassadors, and contributing to both Mason Cable News and The Fourth Estate as a reporter. I hold a current internship in the Admissions Office, working specifically for the Washington Scholars Program. After interning for the Washington Journalism and Media Conference this past summer, I realized that journalism was absolutely what I wanted to spend the rest of my life doing. I'm excited for my time at George Mason and to continue adventuring the DC area! You can catch me at Starbucks.
