Simple Ways to Embrace the Fall while Living in the Desert

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at GCU chapter.

Living in the middle of the desert during fall can feel a bit boring. We don’t have the pretty fall colors or the cool weather in which to cozy up in. If you come from a town that has all those things during the fall season, you might miss it. Here are a few things you can do that can make the fall season feel more like fall.

Watch Halloween/Scary Movies:

Halloween movies are always fun to watch during fall. They get you more into the Halloween spirit and some keep you at the edge of your seat and even scare you a little bit. Some great movies to watch are:

  • Hocus Pocus
  • Halloweentown
  • Twitches
  • Practical Magic
  • Harry Potter
  • The Exorcist
  • Poltergeist

Go to a Pumpkin Patch:

There are pumpkin patches all around phoenix, so it will not be very hard to find one. They are always fun to go and take some cute fall pictures with your friends. Pick out some pumpkins that would look cute to decorate your dorm room. The pumpkin patches located in our area are Mother Nature Farms, MacDonalds Ranch, and Schnepf Farms!

Carve pumpkins:

Get some friends, gather some pumpkins from a pumpkin patch and carve some pumpkins. It is not only a fun fall activity, but they are also great for decorating. Make it a friendly competition and the best carved pumpkin wins!

Go to a haunted house:

It is always fun to get a little scared every now and then, and some people really enjoy the adrenaline rush from getting spooked. If you are one of those people, one of the best ways to cure that is to go to a haunted house. There are plenty to go to during Halloween time, and if you are really looking to get spooked some of the popular haunted houses to go to in Phoenix are 13th Floor or Fear Farm Haunted Hayride.

Pumpkin Spice Lattes:

Nothing gets you into the fall spirit like Pumpkin Spice Lattes (Unfortunately, living in Phoenix we usually have to drink iced coffee). Anything that is pumpkin flavored can instantly get you into the fall mood, and this time of year there are so many different options for pumpkin spiced flavored foods and drinks.

Go Hiking:

Fall is the time of year here in phoenix where the weather starts to become bearable. With the recent cool weather, grab some friends and go hiking. Being out in nature is a great way to get into the fall spirit.

If you are someone who comes from a town with autumn leaves and weather, then you may be really desperate for that cool temperatures and fall colors. Take the two hour drive up to Flagstaff. The leaves are changing colors on the trees, and the weather is cool. It is even cold enough to drink hot coffee. There are many fun activities to do in Flagstaff:

  • Go hiking: There are many pretty places to go and enjoy the fall colors. The cool weather makes it easier to be outside and hike and gives you the ability to enjoy the different scenery and the nature around you.
  • Take pictures in the leaves: Get some friends and have a photoshoot. Taking pictures in the aspen trees and the leaves is always a fun thing to do with friends.
  • Drink hot coffee: With the cool weather up there, you will have the opportunity to drink a hot drink without breaking a sweat.
