Michelle Mercer: Modern Renaissance Woman

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at GCSU chapter.

What is your year?

Senior

Major?

Mass Communication, concentrations in Advertising and Public Relations

Hometown?

Atlanta, GA

Relationship status?

I am happily taken. :)

What are your hobbies?

Foreign languages, travel, illustration, fashion and beauty, blogging, and listening to international music.

What extracurricular activities are you involved in?

Global Business Student Leaders Association, Global Ambassador for International Studies Abroad, Public Relations Student Society of America, Kappa Delta Sorority, Bible study, French Club/Honor Society, and Lambda Pi Eta Communications Honor Society.

Where’s your favorite place in Milledgeville?

That’s tough. Probably the Governor’s Mansion and the grounds around it. The Old Governor’s Mansion, pardon me.

What are your top three memories of your college career?

Rushing KD (or joining KD); study abroad in Rome, Italy; and meeting my college best friend and twin in Kappa Delta.

If you weren’t in your current major, what else do you think you would be studying? Why?

I would definitely be studying history. I love how history is one big story that keeps going and how it helps us understand why people are the way they are and why things are the way they are today.

How would you describe your style? Where do you get your clothes?

I would say a mixture between French, 1950s, and edgy K-pop/rock style. I like to look nice and classic and I like sleek pieces, but I like to break the mold. It can be anywhere from Express, H&M, or something like TJ Maxx. I’m very picky about what I wear, but not where I get it from. I definitely have to fall in love with a piece to buy it, so shopping can be frustrating for me. If I have something, it’s significant.

What are you hoping to do with your major after you graduate?

I would really like to work on an international scale in the communications field. I would like to aim for an account executive or creative director position, possibly with an agency or even a unique company like Cirque du Soleil. I want to be able to use my diverse skill set with an audience that speaks multiple languages, since that’s another one of my passions.

What languages do you speak?

I speak French, and I can understand Spanish and Italian. I have a thing for Asian languages, particularly Chinese and Korean. Lately my goal has been to really learn Korean, and a friend has been teaching me. At one point I even tried Swedish and German! I’m all over the place. It fascinates me so much.

Do you have any pets?

Yes, three cats and a dog.

What are five things on your bucket list?

Travel the world, become an animator for Disney, have my illustrations become famous, have a great marriage, and dedicate everything that I do in my life to God.

What advice would you like to offer our readers about beauty, love, life, academics, or whatever?

Be kind to everyone. You never know what’s going on in their life. It’s also important because often times all you have is your network and if you burn bridges you could lose a contact or a friend. Don’t be afraid to try new things. Study hard, but not too hard. Don’t be afraid to make mistakes because that’s how you learn. Don’t over-involve yourself or you’ll get burnt out. Find a balance between school, extracurricular, and personal life.
