Amelia Lord: SGA Presidential Hopeful

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at GCSU chapter.

Well Bobcats, it’s that time of year again. Homecoming Week. With Homecoming comes the annual SGA Presidential Elections. This week Her Campus interviewed SGA Presidential Canidate Amelia Lord. Here is what she had to say.

Her Campus: Tell us about yourself.

Amelia Lord: I am a sophomore political science major. I have been running for student government positions since I was in 3rd grade! I was born in Hershey, Pennsylvania and lived in 4 different states but I’ve been in GA for 9 years.

HC: Why are you running for SGA President?

AL: I am running for President because I love this campus but there are improvements that can be made. I want to mobilize resources to organizations and make sure that each student can get what they need

HC: Why would you make a good candidate?

AL: I am dedicated to this campus and I am ready to make a change. Not only have I authored or sponsored more resolutions than anyone else in the Senate now but I also hold an officer position in 5 on-campus organizations. I can manage my time and connect students to what they need.

HC: What are you most passionate about improving at Georgia College?

AL: I see endless possibilities at GCSU. We are a campus of 7000 but that means that we can reach every organization who is struggling and every person who is having a harder time whether that is financially or if they are struggling with their mental health. What makes me passionate to do this is that I see it done on a smaller scale through student organizations but I want to make improving our university for the students the main directive of SGA.

HC: What does your platform consist of?

AL: Making our university more distinct by bringing more national recognition. I would love to see Ted Talks hosted on this campus within the next year or two. Making Education more assessable by providing for financially disadvantaged students. This includes growing our Student Emergency Fund and bringing Swipe Out Hunger to GCSU. Expanding our reach by promoting the Glimpse outreach program and providing more for our Early College students.

HC: How would your Presidency be different than the current one?

AL: We have not seen improvements in attendance at sporting events or in SGA transparency. I want to pick up the slack and make sure that my initiatives are carried out. The first thing I would do after being elected would be to work on a unified plan for all student government branches. We need to be on the same page in order to be effective.

Thank you Amelia for taking the time to answer some of our questions. Have a wonderful Homecoming Week, Bobcats!
