Zeta Tau Alpha’s 23rd Annual “Race to Live” 5K

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at FSU chapter.

Every year during the month of October, the Zeta Tau Alpha sorority at Florida State University has their annual “Race to Live” 5K event. The sorority has been organizing this event for the last 22 years, and this year will be their 23rd anniversary. Their goal is similar to that of any other Breast Cancer 5K event: to raise awareness and to support Breast Cancer education.

Annually, over 250,000 women will be diagnosed with Breast Cancer, while over 40,000 will lose their battle with Breast Cancer. This cancer, “is the second leading cause of death among women,” according to National Breast Cancer. When a person reads statistics such as the ones previously stated, one can understand why these young women are so passionate about supporting this cause.

Every year, the sorority manages to outdo themselves. Last year, they had over 1,500 people participating in the race and raised well over $125,000. In 2015, there were over 1,500 participants and they raised over $70,000. Every dollar, nickel, and dime raised will be collected by the ZTA Foundation which is linked to the NFL, Bright Pink, and the American Cancer Society. The money is then split between the three and is used to support Breast Cancer research, education, as well as awareness.

The event will take place on Saturday, Oct. 28, 2017, on Florida State University’s campus. The race will start and end in front of the Zeta Tau Alpha sorority house which is located on West College Avenue. Food will be provided, there will be music to jam to and prizes will be given out to all runners. There are three ways to register for the event: You can click here and register online, you can fill out and submit a registration form to any Zeta Tau Alpha member, or you could just register at the event.

For those who like to run, this is a great way for you to get some great exercise and support a cause. If you’re competitive, why not invite some friends and challenge/support one another? Maybe running isn’t your thing. No worries, you’re more than welcome walk the 5K. With the race being less than a week away, don’t forget to register!
