Why 2018 is the Year of the Royal Family

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at FSU chapter.

It was almost seven years ago, collegiettes, that many of us trudged out of our beds at 4 a.m. to watch the stunningly beautiful Kate Middleton walk down the aisle on Apr. 29, 2011. Why would anyone wake up at that awful hour to watch a complete stranger get married? Because Kate was just like us, becoming what every young woman has wanted to be at one time or another, a princess (well, technically, a duchess). Now, Kate, as we know, is a mother to Prince George, 4, who is the third in line for the British throne, and Princess Charlotte, 2, who is the fourth in line for the throne, and now Kate is pregnant with her third child. She is due in April according to Kensington Palace.

This is not the only royal baby due this year though. Queen Elizabeth II’s granddaughter, Zara Tindall, the 16th in line for the throne and the daughter of Princess Anne, is expecting a baby in the summer. Zara and her husband, Mike Tindall, a former English rugby player have one adorable daughter, Mia.

Just like William and Kate, in complete fairytale romance fashion if fairytales started through blind dates, Meghan Markle, the award-winning actress on Suits and outstanding humanitarian, and Prince Harry, fifth in line to the British throne, are engaged and it’s been all over every media outlet for weeks.

In case, you have been living under a rock or like actually studying, these are all the known details. Kensington Palace confirmed the wedding date is May 19, 2018. The venue is Saint George’s Chapel at Windsor Castle, where Harry was baptized. Prince William will serve as Prince Harry’s best man and all of William’s kids are rumored to be involved in the ceremony as well. Meghan is rumored to have picked her maid of honor but she has not publicly announced it although it is likely her friend and stylist, Jessica Mulroney. The ceremony will be televised to the public so all of us nosy Americans can watch.  The couple’s title after their marriage will likely be the Duke and Duchess of Sussex. Oh and most importantly, their wedding cake is supposedly going to be banana flavored, YGG Meghan.

If one Royal wedding was not enough to get you through 2018, have no fear, there’s another one. Princess Eugenie, Prince Harry’s cousin, is engaged to her boyfriend of seven years, Jack Brooksbank, a nightclub manager. The couple met through mutual friends when they were on a ski trip in 2010, and they got engaged earlier this month while traveling abroad in Nicaragua.

They will be married at Saint George’s Chapel, the same location as Meghan Markle and Prince Harry, but it will not be until autumn 2018 according to Buckingham Palace. Princess Eugenie is also neighbors with Prince William and Kate and Prince Harry and Meghan as they all live within the Kensington Palace grounds. Princess Eugenie is the eighth in line for the British throne. I’m just imagining Eugenie and Meghan and Kate sitting outside on a patio, drinking some tea, of course, and swapping wedding binders and Pinterest suggestions.  Ah, royals, they’re just like us.
