Where Netflix Leads, I Will Follow: Netflix Releases All 7 Seasons Of Gilmore Girls

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at FSU chapter.

As Collegiettes of the millennial age, many of us grew up religiously watching TV shows everyday after school. Shows like Malcolm in the Middle, Heroes,  7th Heaven, and That 70s Show were some favorites that aired at coveted 8:00 p.m. time slots throughout the week. Although you can catch reruns of these shows on TV, on-demand streaming has become the top choice for watching over anything else. More and more people are switching over to services like Netflix and Hulu to watch shows at their convenience. Recently, some of these early ‘00s favorites have been added to Netflix’s instant watch list. One highly-anticipated upcoming release will make you feel nostalgic of phrases like, “Luke’s Diner” and “Stars Hollow.” Ring any bells?

One of the most beloved television shows about mother/daughter relationships was Gilmore Girls. This show hands down made you want to hang out with your mom more.  Die-hard fans can rejoice because Netflix has announced that it will make the entire seven seasons of the show available to stream starting on October 1st! That is a grand total of 153 episodes. Like with most television shows these days, it’s hard not to just keep watching! Gilmore Girls is definitely no exception. One season in and you will be hooked. This is just what us Collegiettes need for the fall—a new show to start so we can sip Pumpkin Spice Lattes and layer blankets upon blankets while binge watching every episode.

Originally airing from 2000 until its final episode in 2007, this show is well-known for its fast pace conversations and copious amounts of coffee drinking.  If you didn’t watch this show growing up, it basically outlines the lives of a single mother played by “Parenthood” star Lauren Graham and her relationship with her book-obsessed daughter Rory (the Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants star Alexis Bledel).  The highs and lows of growing up in a small town are portrayed in the cozy town of Stars Hollow, where everyone gets word of other people’s business in the blink of an eye. Young Rory Gilmore deals with real life drama that includes boys, friends, school, parents, and grandparents.  What makes this show great is that the lives of both Rory and her mother Lorelai are developed, and the show really created two distinct characters who deal with growing up in very different ways. The Rory and Lorelai dynamic is quirky and modern, while Lorelai’s relationship with her mother is another story.  The conservative and snooty Emily Gilmore is more old-fashioned and very concerned about what others think. Although there is drama, there is a ton of humor involved that has helped make Gilmore Girls so popular over the years.

The show tackles topics from all over the place. First love, heartbreak, failing grades, family dilemmas, and friendship woes are all matters that affect the main characters’ lives. Even if you didn’t watched the show at the time of its first season, you can start on October 1st and watch all the way through!
