What Your Instagram Filter Says About Your FSU Experience

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at FSU chapter.

College is full of difficult decisions. From deciding on the perfect happy hour outfit to debating if your 9 a.m. lecture tomorrow is really worth waking up for, the struggle of having to make such significant choices takes a toll on us. However, no selection is more important or crucial than that of choosing an Instagram filter. After all, no one will be able to see just how great your life is if your picture doesn’t have the perfect effect. A choice of Instagram filter says a lot about a person, right?

As Seminoles, we are surrounded by so many places on campus that shape our college experience. Whether it’s the relaxed environment of Landis or the exciting spirit of Doak, each FSU hot spot has its own personality that makes it a signature, just like the Instagram filters we know and love.

Doak Campbell Stadium – Clarendon

There are few filters as vibrant and dramatic as Clarendon, and there are few things as spirited and crazy as the stadium on game day. If you happen to be wearing a dress that looks less garnet and more maroon, adding a Clarendon filter is a quick fix.

Potbelly’s (Happy Hour) – Slumber

Because this is what you need after a few hours of early drinking before going out again. Slumber is a calm filter for subtle colors, much like the relaxed and chill spirit of happy hour on a Friday night.

Strozier Library – Gingham

The filter Gingham makes a picture very bright, transforming tans to whites and blacks to light browns. (Not be used after spring break, or no one will be able to see that you’ve gotten any sun.) However, this filter accurately represents how you look after hours spent cramming for a test in Strozier. After all, you probably haven’t seen daylight in a while.

McDonald’s on Dewey and Tennessee – Sierra

You know, the one across the street from Degraff that usually stops serving McFlurry’s after 10 p.m. but that we all keep going back to anyways. This McDonald’s doesn’t usually come to mind when we think of essential locations at Florida State, but it should. It’s where we go when we need to get picked up from the Strip to avoid the crowded parking garage. It’s the answer to late night fast food cravings. Sierra is just as underrated. It’s not a life-altering filter that drastically changes your photo, but sometimes it’s just needed. Period.

Westcott Fountain – Valencia

Since blurry/what-is-even-happening isn’t an Instagram filter, Valencia will have to do. While it’s a great choice if you want to sharpen your features and add a light tint, Valencia gives your photo a slightly faded look. And the truth: you’re probably also slightly faded when jumping into the fountain on your 21st birthday.

Landis Green – Lo-Fi

Lo-Fi saturates the colors, making your picture of that European garden you visited on your summer study abroad trip way artsier. This filter makes the grass look greener and your shadow more silhouette-like. If you’re trying to document an afternoon spent in your ENO Hammock on Landis Green, Lo-Fi should be your go-to filter.
