Her Campus (HC): Let’s start with a fun question. Where do you see yourself in five years?
Monica Shevock (MS): PA school! If I really feel rambunctious I’ll go to med school after. I just really want to work in a hospital. Ever since I was little I’ve been fascinated by hospitals.
HC: You’re the founder of the FSU CrossFit club. How did you initially get started in fitness?
MS: In high school, my volleyball coach made us attend CrossFit as a form of conditioning…even after our four-hour practices. I absolutely fell in love with it. There was quickly a group of us who started going together and participating in other fitness events like Spartan Races and Tough Mudders. I was totally hooked, even my family joined in!
HC: What made you start the FSU CrossFit Club?
MS: When I first came to Tallahassee, I immediately started looking for the nearest CrossFit gym. I then met Rachel Drummey, and we decided there needed to be a CrossFit Club that college students could afford. Our club is only $100 a semester…versus the usual CrossFit price of $120 a month! It was also a really great way to meet other college kids who are interested in the same thing. I’ve made some of my best friends through it.
HC: What was starting a club like?
MS: It was A LOT of paperwork and patience. We started the process one summer and didn’t get approved until the following January. We had a ton of people who were interested though, so that was no problem.
HC: Has this taught you a lot about leadership?
MS: Of course! Definitely has taught me great time management skills. Between the club, my own workouts, working, research, being the IM chair for my sorority, and taking 15 credits of science classes I tend to lose my mind. So I learned how to balance everything really well.
HC: What advice do you have for people who want to start a club?
MS: Just be prepared! Nothing ever works out smoothly. There is always a million bumps in the road so you have to be committed and deal with stress well. Find a good group of people to help you through it.
HC: How to get involved in the club?
MS: Check out the FSU CrossFit Facebook page. You can do a week of free trial classes to make sure CrossFit is for you!
HC: Let’s end with a fun fact about you!
MS: *Without hesitation* I ran with bulls in Spain! I’ve been skydiving. I went on a medical mission’s trip to Peru. I’m basically the most interesting woman in the world.
