Five Reasons to Watch HBO’s Game of Thrones

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at FSU chapter.

*warning: may contain spoilers*

1. It’s a fantasy series without really being entirely fictional: Unfortunately, dragons are not real and the entire plot and characters are fictional, but it is still an exciting periodical political thriller. The show’s consisting theme is power, justice, revenge, and war; all of these elements make it that much more satisfying to watch. Again, it is all about power and those who are willing to do whatever it takes to have it. The main source of conflict: a really uncomfortable chair called the Iron Throne. He who sits upon it, rules all the seven kingdoms.

2. The dynamic writing: Based off the Song of Fire and Ice series by George R.R. Martin, the script for the show follows incredibly close to its original writing. To those who have or have not read the books, it is just as compelling as the television series. With just an hour time slot, you will wonder how fast an hour can go. Each episode is filled with ingenious dialogue, banter, and vivid imagery; you will actually be in tears when the end credits appear.

3. Plot twists on plot twists: Just when you think you can understand what is happening and what is to come, something so incredibly mind-blowing happens that it begins to make you question if you really know anything at all. This is by far one of the main reasons a lot of viewers who have not read the books are so hooked to the series. In the first season, it takes a bit to pick up because of all the necessary information that needs to be given in order for the viewer to understand, but then you have events like the end of the pilot episode that make you go “WTF!” Instant hook.

4. Sex appeal: Yes this show is loosely based off of medieval period history. Yes, there was most definitely a lot of infidelity happening then too and Game of Thrones is no exception to that rule. You can almost guarantee in every episode you will see someone’s genitals, *SPOILER* a little incest, creepy touching, rape, and some steamy intercourse scenes. If that’s not your thing, no judgments. But we do feel bad if you choose not to watch the series because of a little sex. What does Game of Thrones have that you want? Men. Sexy men. I am of course talking about Ser Jaime Lannister –*SPOILER*  yes he might push children off of towers and be in love with his twin sister, but deep down he might possibly have a good heart, and he is hella fine. Another piece of eye candy takes form of the Winterfell bastard, Jon Snow – he knows nothing. If there is one thing this show does not lack, it is sexy men.

5. Bringing the masses together via hate: While everyone has their own agenda to attend to, there is that one thing that brings people together. Everyone hates Jofferey Baratheon. That is pretty much all you need to know. That is the entire show. Join in because as it turns out, hating someone with an entire community is a lot of fun.

So be sure to watch Game of Thrones as soon as possible if you have not. Season four has only just begun and there is plenty of time to catch up. For those already watching it, good for you. Game of Thrones is on every Sunday night on HBO at 9 p.m.
