5 Iconic Artists Who Made Christmas Songs You’ve Probably Never Heard Of

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at FSU chapter.

1. “Christmas In Hollis” by Run DMC

Most iconic line: “My name’s D.M.C. with the mic in my hand / And I’m chilling and coolin’ just like a snowman!”

This is really just one of those songs with a music video you need to watch. Sure, the song itself is awesome, but it’s the music video that really brings it all home. The whole thing is very reminiscent of a 90’s Saturday Night Live skit and it tells a Christmas story we’ve never heard before. A holiday rap song is really just a rare gem to begin with, but this one is as iconic as it gets.

2. “8 Days of Christmas” by Destiny’s Child

Most iconic line: “On the first day of Christmas my baby gave to me: quality T-I-M-E”

As if we needed another reason to love Destiny’s Child! Instead of eight maids-a-milking, Beyoncé’s eighth day of Christmas consisted of a pair of Chloe shades and diamond belly ring. The thing we love most about this twist on the classic “12 Days of Christmas” jingle is that it really embodies everybody’s inner 2000s diva.

3. “Sleigh Ride” by TLC

Most iconic line: “T to the Left Eye C if you can take a glide / Giddiup the guts and step on up so we can sleigh ride”

From the iconic ladies that brought us “Waterfalls” and “No Scrubs,” a true Christmas treasure was born. “Sleigh Ride” plays on different lines from traditional Christmas classics, but with the early 90’s girl-group sound we know and love.

4. “Christmas in Harlem” by Kanye West

Most iconic line: “The streets lit up, it feel like Christmas officially / Told her that, “You the star at the top of my Christmas tree”

Kanye West: a simple — and usually serious — man. So, it seems rather unusual that he would release a song for the “most wonderful time of the year.” But nonetheless, this jam-packed track features the vocals of Teyana Taylor, Vado, Jim Jones, Cyhi the Prynce, Pusha T, Big Sean, Cam’ron, and Musiq Soulchild.

5. “My Only Wish (This Year)” by Britney Spears

Most iconic line: “Last night I took a walk in the snow / Couples holding hands, places to go / Seems like everyone but me is in love”

Early 2000’s Britney (aka the best Britney) strikes again! Released in the same year as “Oops!… I Did it Again” and “Stronger,” this Christmas song gives us another side of Britney. Instead of Britney’s typical sexually-charged sound, “My Only Wish” depicts a more innocent, whimsical version of her. Aside from being a sweet and fun song, it’s also an anthem for all the single girls watching everyone else find love in the holiday season (it’s okay, we’ve all been there)!
