What You Can Do To Brighten Up Your Room

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Framingham chapter.

Around this time of year, the sky gets darker sooner and some of us suffer from Seasonal Affective Disorder, which is related to the change in seasons. These factors can make you feel pretty down and not like yourself. You could also just be having the worst week ever and need a pick me up. Here are some items you can add to your room to brighten it up and make it more comfortable for this time of year.

1. Small Plants

I recently just bought a tiny fake potted plant at Target. Instead of having leaves, the top of the plant is made out of little wood chips painted green arranged to look like a bush. It’s just so cute, tiny and bright green, so it just puts you in a good mood whenever you look at it. I also have a small bamboo plant and a cactus for some variety around the room.

2. Lights

Some people with Seasonal Affective Disorder use light therapy as a way to help with the effects. I have small white Christmas lights going all around my room to provide a softer light than my large overhead room light. You could also get a small desk lamp or a standing light if the room has space for it. It is important to have a lot of light to combat the lack of light outside.

3. Accessories

I like to put up colorful accessories around my room. I have a few hats hung up along with some scarves and jewelry. It really shows your personality in the room and adds some color and sparkle. It is especially good to hang up accessories with some meaning or stories behind them so you can look at them and smile when you’re feeling low.

4. Comforting or Nice Smells

Smell can really affect mood, so it’s important to fill the room with smells that make you feel light and happy. You should have a few different sprays or perfumes to choose from. I like to spray my bed, my rolling rack of clothes and just the air in general. It uplifts your spirits just to have the room smelling nice.

5. Pillows

Get a bunch of pillows and have the comfiest bed ever! When you feel sad, it’s important to have a safe space. Pillows should make you feel happy and cuddled. I love having a variety of fun shapes, stuffed animals and traditional square pillows with different designs.
