19 Things I Will Do in my 19th Year

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Framingham chapter.

1. Venture out of my comfort zone.

Take that strange astronomy class; eat the salmon sushi; I will do things that make me uncomfortable.

2. Focus on loving myself.

Media will tell me that I am not perfect, but I must learn to tell myself, “I am the best me that I can be.”

3. Disconnect from social media.

Social media leads me to compare myself to other. Without social media, the only person I can compare myself with is who I was yesterday.

4. Fall in love with something new everyday.

“Everyday may not be good, but there’s something good in everyday.” Whether it’s as simple as fluffy socks or a good chocolate chip cookie, find something lovely about each day.

5. Travel far and wide.

No bills, no responsibilities- This is the year I will go on a road trip or seek adventures in Europe.

6. Practice my Spanish.

I will read books in Spanish and communicate with Spanish speakers; I will not let 10 years of Spanish class go to waste.

7. Volunteer more.

I love helping people; I love volunteering. But lately my excuse for not volunteering is, “I don’t have time.” This year I will make time.

8. Find my passion.

In my second semester as an undeclared freshman, it’s crunch time to pick a major. Through trial and error, this year I will find my passion and pursue it.

9. Live a healthier lifestyle.

No more goals that read, “Lose weight and fit into size 2 jeans.” That is not a good way to live. This year I will eat more fruit and protein rich foods. I will lift weights to improve my strength. I will meditate in the evenings to improve my mental health.

10. Make new friends.

Life is easier with friends, the more the merrier. Joining more clubs will expand my social circle.

11. Make a plan, but be willing to alter it as time goes on.

A plan is good; it gets you from point A to point B. But sometimes diversions, life, tragedies, things, etc. happen and plans get altered. Accept change and move from there.

12. Make my parents proud.

Making my parents proud would make me proud. I’ll work hard for an award, Dean’s List, an accomplishment- something to make us all happy. It’s a win-win.

13. Make better judgments.

Tell myself that yes, I need the extra hour of studying, or it’s time to turn off Netflix and go to sleep. Make judgments that make future me better.

14. Express my feelings, instead of bottling up emotions.

Communication is key; expressing when I am sad, or mad, or lonely will lead to a lot less arguments and lash outs.

15. Practice patience.

Patience for slow walkers, for screaming kids, for mothers who don’t understand technology. It’s what I’ll work on this year.

16. Enjoy nature’s beauty.

Instead of fancy restaurants and movie theatre dates, this year I will be one with nature. Sunrises, sunsets, hikes, beaches, mountains; I already can’t wait.

17. Break my bad habits.

Sleeping until noon, always being tardy, and never moisturizing (to name a few). 12 months to break 12 bad habits, I got this!

18. Read more books.

Books will expand my vocabulary, take me to other worlds, and transform my view on life. So this year, I will finally finish Eat, Pray, Love and maybe even reread the Hunger Games saga.

19. Carpe Diem.

It’s the final year of my teenage existence, and I plan to live wild and free.
