What Guys Really Think About Valentine’s Day

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Fordham chapter.

February 14th – a day that most girls would describe as one of the greatest days of the year…but to guys, it is for the most part, nothing short of an annoyance. The time to get dolled up for your Valentine and hope for endless romance is here, collegiettes.  But first, you should keep in mind what guys think of this holiday. What? All boys don’t love a day dedicated to love and spoiling their girl as much as we do? Crazy, huh?

When asked in a survey, 60% of guys think of flowers, gifts, and chocolate when they were asked what first came to mind when they heard the words “Valentine’s Day.”  40% think of how lonely they presume they will be on V-Day.  None of them showed too much excitement over the holiday in regards to how it will affect them. However, most guys did make a point of saying that if they were to celebrate, they would do what they could to make their significant others happy. Freshman Michael Kontolios said his ideal Valentine’s Day “would be spent just hanging out with my girlfriend all day and doing whatever she wants.” Freshman Tony Fox thinks that Valentine’s Day “is a holiday for couples to treat one another, no matter how big or small.” Clearly, its not that bad of a day in a guy’s eyes, they just see it much differently than us girls do. For sophomore Kevin Fulmer,  “there is a difference in significance [between girls and guys]. I don’t think that there needs to be a special day to do something special for someone. With that said, I would still do something super special because if I’m with someone who has Valentine’s Day built up in her mind, I want to make her happy and not leave her disappointed.”

Guys are, however, on the same page with the single ladies who aren’t too happy being alone on Valentine’s Day. Freshman Jason Watkins says he wants to just ignore the day altogether. “I plan on watching ‘How I Met Your Mother’ reruns and eating KitKats.” Then there are guys like Matthew Drozd who think Valentine’s Day “is a lovey dovey day in which I stay in my single phase.” Girls, you’re not the only ones who struggle with being alone on the Day of Love. Rumor has it, lots of guys will be out and about the evening of Valentine’s Day. If you’re still in the market for a valentine, don’t give up! They’re looking just as much as you are.

Happy Valentine’s Day, collegiettes!
