Mariah Carey who is also known as one of the greatest female singers of our time has just openly shared her connection to Bipolar Disorder. Herself. And no, the diagnosis was not recent. In fact, it was roughly about 17 years ago. Mind Blown. Mariah was diagnosed with Bipolar II Disorder after being hospitalized for a mental and physical breakdown back in 2001 and has not been comfortable to openly speak about it until now.

According to her interview with People Magazine, at first she believed that her sleepless nights were mainly because she was suffering from some sort of severe sleep disorder due to her mind not being able to rest and constantly thinking about work. As a pop mega super star that she is, it’s undeniable that the feeling of letting down the people around her as well as her fans was immense and unfortunately took control over her. The fear of losing everything she had built after rising to the top was a constant knock on her door. So arguably, admitting to an illness of that extent at the top of her career was not an option. Mariah made it clear that she didn’t want her illness to define what she could bring to the table.

For 17 years, Mariah has been living in constant fear of someone exposing her secret to which she chose to isolate herself as much as possible and even live in denial of her own illness. As the years went by the burden was just too heavy to hold living through a failed marriage and giving birth to twins, she finally came to terms in accepting who she really is and is now currently in treatment and therapy. She is slowly opening up to more positive people in her life and is leaning towards working out, acupuncture, eating healthy and spending more time with her kids for support.
