Students Speak out on Children Before Marriage

As time progresses, the shift from traditional to modernism within the family structure is continuously evolving. In today’s society, individuals are opting for babies before wedding bells. Initiated priest of Obatala, Bill Lowman, believes this shift which goes far beyond marriage, comes as a result of modernity and technology. “I am not exactly sure if the shift is away from marriage, or more so, away from the belief in traditional cultural values,” said Lowman.  “Some people believe so much in 'modernity' and technology that they no longer feel a need to seek out and live by traditional and historically established ways of social organization.” READ MORE

Natural Hair Care Product Review: Conditioners

By simone.mayes
November 14, 2012 - 7:12pm

The general job of a conditioner is to moisturize hair strands from the root to tip. It changes the appearance of the hair by making it look shinier and has a softer feel to the touch. Not conditioning your hair after washing is like not adding fabric softener to the wash. No matter what your hair texture is or whether your hair is healthy or not, you need to condition. The essentials to look for in conditioners are oils, jojoba, avocadoes, or Shea butter. Condition every time you wash your hair. If you have color treated hair, you should definitely be conditioning regularly. Dye dries your hair and makes it more brittle. Conditioning your hair after you wash it helps to keep your strands healthy....

Dubbed the “King of the West Coast” by Dr. Dre, the talented Kendrick Lamar dropped his first official studio album, Good Kid m.A.A.d City. Lamar's second studio album probes the rappers psyche during his life in California as a curious teen. Lamar’s album debuted with over 241,000 sales and “sat atop the Billboard Rap chart, the Billboard R&B/Hip-Hop chart and at #2 on the Billboard 100,” according to Interscope Records. The album depicts the rapper as the good kid within a mad city. It explores what life is like within the streets of Compton through Lamar’s intense soliloquies, interactions, and rhymes. Stirring the conscious of the listener by speaking truth track after track, Lamar proves his valid position in Hip-Hop....

Scootin' in Style: HC FAMU

By Itopia Mills
October 3, 2012 - 2:59pm

From the day I received an email that HC FAMU would be getting complimentary Kickboard Campus scooters, I was ecstatic! I love free stuff, and HC always treats their Campus Correspondents right. I got off of work one night to find two oversized packages that my roommate left in the middle of our living room floor. I'll admit, at first I was a little skeptical to open the box. I opened up the brown packaging box, but the scooters sat inside the white and black Kickboard Campus boxes for days. When I finally decided to open them up, I felt like a kid reliving my childhood memories. READ MORE

Morality and Ethos for Florida A&M

My opinion on the culture of hazing at our university is one of total consistency. Hazing is wrong. In my eyes I believe hazing should not be accepted as a ritual or rites of passage into organizations on campus. There are many arguments as to why hazing is accepted at historically black colleges and universities and on other college campuses across the nation. Personally I believe hazing is prominent on campuses because it is embedded within a university’s social culture. The hazing culture is a poison which infiltrates a respectable university such as Florida A&M and leads to unsatisfactory results. READ MORE

Spring 2012 Black Power Recap

By Robyn Mowatt
September 6, 2012 - 7:30pm

As a black woman at one of the largest HBCU’s in the country I was empowered when I witnessed lectures this past spring by two notable African American intellectuals. Angela Davis and Cornel West visited Tallahassee a few months ago, experiencing both lectures one at my university (Davis) and West at Florida State University, were moments I will remember for eternity. Both are influential activists and distinguished individuals due to their strength rhetorically in the past and presently. READ MORE
