This semester’s biannual “J School Journals” student documentary night will feature the work of FAMU’s School of Journalism and Graphic Communication broadcast journalism students Kristen Swilley and Brandon McMullen. Kristen Swilley is an award-winning student journalist that has served in many leadership roles in the SJGC including editor-in-chief of Journey Magazine and weather anchor for FAMU TV 20. Brandon McMullen is a talented videographer, and founder of a media production company, BMMB, which specializes in photography, film production, advertisements, tutorials, documentaries and more. “Brandon has been a great partner. Rattlers Speak Out on Natural Hair

Famu is host to a plethora of women and men with their own unique style. This diversity can be seen with a simple walk on the set during Set Friday. There, you can get a sense of the wide range of personalities that are alive on this campus. During this time, Just Kinkin It members conducted interviews with fellow rattlers. The questions posed were all in regards to natural hair and how they felt about it. We interview people whose hairstyles range from natural and perms on women, to long locks and low cuts on men, and even the staff. Here is what they had to say. READ MORE

Is Natural Hair Just a Fad?

In 2010, Design Essentials, an Atlanta based hair-care company, commissioned a study in regards to the influx in women opting to wear their natural hair instead of receiving a chemical relaxer. According to Mintel, a consumer spending and market research firm, 36% of women said that they did not chemically relax or straighten their hair in 2011. This figure increased by 10% from the 26% of women saying the same in 2010. Mintel also reported that the purchase of do-it-yourself or “box” relaxer kits decreased by a factor of 17% between 2006 and 2011. READ MORE

Absence of Band Tests Homecoming Morale

The traditions of Florida A&M University’s homecoming are like no other. Streets are filled with food, clothes, and jewelry vendors and alumni come from all over the nation decked out in orange and green; while a week-long list of activities build up excitement amongst students for the big game. However, this year’s festivities will be missing a sacred component that will test the spirit of rattlers young and old. Since November of 2011, the famed ‘Marching 100’ band has been under suspension following an alleged hazing incident that resulted in the death of FAMU student and band drum major, Robert Champion. What to do during Homecoming Week 2012

  This week Florida A&M University (FAMU) will hold its annual homecoming celebration. With all of the chaotic exuberance on the hill, one must wonder: “What to do?” The Homecoming Planning committee, who has met every week since June 2012, has planned a successful program for homecoming. Even if you cannot make the daytime events, the night life sure proves to be quite worthy of your attention. Saturday, Nov. 3 was the kickoff of the celebrations with the Rattler 5K run on Sunday, Nov. 4, heralded by the Kick Off Community Worship Service, and Coronation celebrations; and Monday Nov. 5, brought the Spirit and Service Day, then the Comedy and Talent Shows. Recap: Homecoming 2012 Comedy Show

The 2012 FAMU Homecoming celebration has officially begun! Homecoming week kicked off on Saturday, Nov. 3 with the 5K Wellness Run as Rattlers were searching for a relaxing and entertaining environment. The Homecoming Comedy and Talent Show took place on Monday, Nov. 7 at 7 p.m. and was filled with nothing less than laughter and stomach pains. Tatiana Siplin, third year health science occupation and wellness student from Ft. Pierce, Fla thought the Comedy and Talent show was exciting. “I had a lot of fun. The crowd interaction was great! The comedy portion was hilarious and the talent was pretty good.” READ MORE

125 years ago on October 3rd 1887, Florida A&M University was the State Normal College for Colored Students. It began classes with just 2 instructors and 15 students; it was the only co-ed institution in the state of Florida at the time. In 1953 the school went from College to University status and began a curriculum and colleges reconstruction. Between 1953 and 1968 the Schools of Pharmacy, Law, Graduate Studies, and Nursing were created. The FAMU Hospital was created and became operational in 1956; this was the only hospital for blacks within 150 miles of Tallahassee. Not only is she our president’s wife but she is an American citizen. First Lady Michelle Obama spoke to students, families, and locals at the Leon County Civic Center on Monday, September 17, 2012. As the facility became over capacity, the crowd was filled with news media, cell phones snapping shots in the air, and shouts of praise to the First Lady and her husband, the President of the United States.
