Unplugged and Intimate: Students at FSU come together to support their Almuni Poetry Group

  A.D.H.D. Unplugged made for a long awaited intimate get together for the fans of Team A.D.H.D.  After a short hiatus, the poetry group came together to speak with their fans in a truly unplugged setting. The little space in Florida States Oglesby Union room 311E held about 55 audience members.  A.D.H.D. member Michael McCain says making a come back like this shows appreciation to our fans.   READ MORE

From Books to Business: Flavs by 31

She’s young, talented and at the age of 22 she already owns her own successful business.  Autumn Harris, creator of “Flavs by 31”, is a Florida A&M University senior majoring in social work.  Harris says despite her major she decided to start her own business doing something she’s passionate about.   “Flavs by 31” offers customers home cooked meals every Friday, Saturday and Sunday.  From her menu, customers can choose from a variety of different soul food plates such as the Bad Boy, the Family Reunion and the Michelle Obama.  Harris also donates $1 from every order to the “National Juvenile Association for Juvenile Diabetes”.   READ MORE

Gateway Project Causes Traffic Concerns

Construction began this week, and pretty soon there will be one more building added to the busy streets of Tallahassee.  It’s called The Gateway Project, and the highly anticipated 50,000 square foot building will be on the corner of Monroe and Tennessee Street.  The once vacant lot, cluttered with litter and signs, will soon be transformed into a Walgreens. In a statement released by The City of Tallahassee, site plans for construction were approved on April 23, 2009.  This will be the first time in years residents in the area will have a store, within walking distance from their homes, to buy food, supplies and prescription drugs. New Bill Offers Clean Energy for the State of Florida

Try to imagine a future where people stop depending gasoline and diesel fuels for transportation and start using a healthier source.  Well, Senator Wilton Simpson and Rep. Lake Ray did just that when they proposed the Florida Natural Gas Vehicle Act (SB 560/HB 579) early February. Simpson says he proposed the bill to encourage more people to use natural-gas fuel throughout Florida.  “It is important that we realize the implications of the continued use of crude oil, and take action to promote and encourage alternative means of energy production,” said Simpson. According to the senator the price of natural gas, compared to gasoline, clearly shows its cost-saving ability. Compressed natural gas averages $2.29, where as diesel and gasoline average around $3.91...

Dance Tallahassee Offers All Adult Dance Studio

Dance Tallahassee offers drop-in classes with no registration or sign-up required. Classes include: ballet, jazz, contemporary and hot pilates. Inspired by the open studio style in New York City, Dance Tallahassee owner, Ashley Adams, saw a need for this type of studio in Tallahassee. “I wanted to give students, who didn’t want to join their schools formal dance team, a chance to continue their dance education,” Adams said. Raised in Orlando, Adams attended Florida State University. She went on to work with Disney and spent five years as a Radio City Rockette in New York. After returning to Tallahassee from New York, Adam’s husband had surprised her with the new studio. Dance Tallahassee opened its doors in February 2010....

FAMU Student Performs with Universoul Circus

Universoul Circus has hired FAMU student, Dayzsa Gartrell, 22, as their featured ballerina. She will travel with the circus performing in the ballerina role, as well as in the hip-hop choreography. Gartrell’s dance journey began at the age of nine when she participated in a local talent show. Impressed by her performance, she was invited to dance with Jacksonville Center of The Arts. Since then, she has danced with Mahogany Dance Theatre at Florida A&M University and Atlanta Dance Connection in Atlanta, GA. While in Atlanta, Gartrell auditioned for the role with the Universoul Circus. “I auditioned with about 13 other women and they actually didn’t even choose anyone from the audition,” Gartrell said....

J-School Journals Advance

This Saturday, Dec. 8, 2012, at 7:00 p.m., the School of Journalism & Graphic Communication will host it’s annual J-School Journals. This documentary review night will exhibit the documentaries made by seniors in SJGC. Planned and executed by the student run PRodigy PR Firm, J-School Journals is held in high regard among its patrons each year. “I found J-School Journals to be thoroughly enjoyable,” said senior business administration student and former host, Monique Mussio. “The documentaries were very entertaining while insightful.
