Perfecting The #Selfie

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Fairfield chapter.

We all have been caught taking a selfie. Maybe you were taking it on Snapchat or for your Instagram, but selfies have taken over social media. When scrolling through your newsfeed, it’s natural to see your friends face appear by itself with the caption, #SELFIE. Selfies have become very popular and our culture has even adopted the word selfie into the dictionary. How do we know we are taking them correctly? Read on for some tips on how to capture that perfect selfie.

1. Be confident: When snapping your perfect selfie, you must have the confidence to take the photo. Don’t be afraid to post it. If you spent a couple extra minutes on your hair and make up, let everyone see it!

2. Switch it to the “selfie cam”: Make sure to use the forward-facing camera. This will make it easier to take your photo since you will be able to see yourself and know if your photos are coming out well.

3. Find the best angle: Everyone has a good and bad side so when you’re using the “selfie cam” on your smartphone, make sure you try different angles until you are satisfied with one.

4. Know your lighting: Lighting is everything. Sitting on your bed might not be the best place for a selfie; try to experiment. Maybe turn your main light off and use your lamp, or try a different spot in the room on where the light hits. Lighting could change the entire effect of the photo.

5. Find your pose: There are many different faces that you can make in a selfie. One of the most famous is the duck face. If you are not as adventurous, go for the simple smile and laugh. As for me, my personal favorite is the fierce face that is subtle yet shows off my personality!

6. Find the perfect filter: With Instagram, we can edit our photos. Make sure to find a filter that takes the photo up a notch but is natural at the same time. Being natural is key.

7. Write a clever caption: If you are worried about looking silly in your selfie, include a funny caption to show you aren’t so serious about the photo. Sometimes a cute emoji will do the trick!
