A Millennial’s View On Valentine’s Day

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Fairfield chapter.

Valentine’s Day is a day that is dedicated to ~love~, but most importantly, there is endless chocolate – so you can count me in! I have personally always been a huge fan of Valentine’s Day, whether I was in a relationship or was single. Also, Valentine’s Day is a perfect excuse to wear red, which is ~so~ my color.

Many Millennials have the feeling that Valentine’s Day is “stupid” or “overrated,” and just a holiday to remind all the singles of the world that they are alone. Personally, I believe this is a very pessimistic take on the holiday and not at all what it is about. Valentine’s Day is the celebration of love – and that love can be a romantic love, friendship love, or even love from your parents. Every Valentine’s Day, my dad gets me flowers and chocolate covered strawberries and I feel like the luckiest daughter in the world to have a dad like that. Of course, you should appreciate your loved ones every day, but life gets busy and we often get caught in the trivial parts of our day that we forget. Valentine’s Day reminds us to stop and celebrate love, and appreciate the people we love.

Just because you are single on Valentine’s Day, it does not need to be another reminder that you are alone, unless you make it like that. Of course, having a significant other on a day dedicated to love would be more ideal, but I’m not going to lie, it is not necessary. Be a strong, independent lady and buy yourself flowers and chocolate because self-love is important too. Love will come when it comes and boys will come and go, but at the end of the day you always have yourself. Use Valentine’s Day as a time to treat yourself!

It is easy to be sad on Valentine’s Day when you see happy couples celebrating and posting on Instagram, but love is something to be celebrated. I hope that people remember that before they start bashing the holiday. I hope that whatever your current relationship status is, that you enjoy the day dedicated to love and let the ones you love know that you love them. Oh, and eat tons of chocolate because Valentine’s Day is the perfect excuse to! Happy Valentine’s Day, collegiettes!
