This past Saturday, March 28th, the Writers House hosted their first ever Murder Mystery Party, organized by Alison Cheng and Charlotte Hughes. An email was sent to the participants about a week before the event, so people had time to familiarize themselves with their role and get their costumes together. The theme was the 20s, so there were mob bosses and flappers galore. Everyone showed up at seven, in costume. Many people had put a lot of effort and creativity into their characters. Some even used accents and stayed in character the entire night!
Before the event started, there was some food and people mingled. The first round of envelopes containing instructions was distributed and everyone got down to work. I was fittingly assigned the role of a reporter, so I had to go around and ask certain people very specific questions. Everyone was also given fake money to bribe others with, in exchange for information.
About halfway through the party, a mob boss was giving a speech when he was suddenly shot. The rest of the party had the guests trying to discover who his murderer was. A lot of people gave conflicting stories and many seemed to have a possible motive for why they’d want the mob boss dead.
Eventually, the Private Investigator called everyone together and presented the evidence. The guests were then invited to submit their votes for who they thought was guilty. After everyone had voted, the culprit and their motive were announced. The Chief of Police had killed the mob boss, because the two had some private history together. Many people were astonished at this discovery!
All in all, it was a huge success and everyone had a great time. This event will hopefully become a tradition of the Writers House in the years to come.
